This is the top gardening podcast in my opinion. Few gardening podcasts delve into the day to day problems we face in our gardens and how to fix them. I’ve learned so much from this podcast and am looking forward to seeing my garden thrive!

  • Amazing information, iffy format.

It seams in recent weeks there has been far more adds, all for my pillow, and other very conservative company’s and events. I really do not want any sort of politics mixed in with my gardening. I that being said, if you are in the mid south, this is the place to stay current with gardening, the current weather and the coloration between the two.

That di a excellent job answering call in and text in questions. I just wish it was produced by a different organization, or had different sponsors.

Q: What are the key categories in the Great Tomato Contest and how do entrants participate?
There are four main categories (heaviest, cherry, slicers, heirloom) with first, second, and third place ribbons and cash prizes, plus an overall grand champion prize; entrants bring at least two tomatoes and can enter more than one category; drop-off runs 9-11, judging noon-3, and the event is free with a Master Gardener help desk and kids area.

Q: Should I water today after a rain yesterday, especially for newly laid sod?
Yes, after sod is laid you want the first few days with a thorough watering to establish the root ball, then back off to deeper, less frequent waterings to promote a healthy root system.
Mid South Gardening 1_17_2026
Q: What should I do about amaryllis bulbs to get blooms this season?
Let the bulb rest via a dry, cool period for a few months, then bring it back inside and provide warm stimuli to encourage blooming.
Mid South Gardening 1_17_2026
Q: Chad, should I pop a dormant shrub or plant and look at the roots before buying?
Yes, scratches test the roots: make sure there are white, healthy roots and avoid plants that look unhealthy or root-bound, especially in winter.
Mid-South Gardening 3-21-26
Q: Does monkey grass spread and should you worry about muscari monkey grass spreading?
Monkey grass does spread, but the clumping varieties like muscari mono spread much more slowly and are less likely to take over; variegated forms are more of a concern and can spread, so choose clumping varieties for containment.
