  • Matt Chorley’s Urgent Questions

Good moments but not up to the level of his Previous Red Box podcast. But maybe I just reflect an older generation than your current target (50+)?

Totally get why my reactions might not seem important. But I thought a part of Matt’s appeal was that he spanned generations?

  • About time, Mr Chorley

Still not reached his zenith that he achieved at Times Radio, but a pretty good pod especially if you can’t listen to the show due to work etc. Insightful and funny content from Mr Matt Chorley of Somerset.

Loses the 5th star due to the inclusion of the boring Member of Matt’s Parliament feature, which is dull and boring. Who cares?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

What would make British Jews feel safer?
Q: James, how are you?
Very good, and all the better for having been taken right into the heart of democracy by Matt Chorley.
How do you tell Trump to play Putin?
Q: What is the main risk of mis-underestimating Russia, and how has it shaped Western policy?
Mis-underestimating Russia leads to a dangerous gap in anticipating its actions and vulnerabilities, which historically has pushed Western policy toward overconfidence in certainty and under-preparedness, highlighting the need for a consistent, informed, strategic approach rather than reactive one-offs.
How do you tell Trump to play Putin?
Q: How did briefings to Bush, Obama, and Trump differ in substance and approach?
Bush favored deep, conversational briefings with lots of questions; Obama relied on prepared briefing books and sought clarity; Trump was less engaged and often resistant to in-depth briefings, relying on his own instincts rather than structured analysis.
What happened to Morgan McSweeney's phone?
Q: How does diplomacy work when events unfold rapidly, such as negotiating with Iran or managing US diplomatic messaging?
Ambassadors describe relying on a mix of formal channels and informal networks, with intermediaries and multiple fora (media, Congress, business contacts) helping to piece together evolving situations.
What happened to Morgan McSweeney's phone?
Q: What happened with Morgan McSweeney's phone?
The phone was stolen, and while it was government property, the released transcript suggests that some WhatsApps were lost and there was debate about how seriously the incident was treated given the potential sensitivity of the data.
