  • Matt Chorley’s Urgent Questions

Good moments but not up to the level of his Previous Red Box podcast. But maybe I just reflect an older generation than your current target (50+)?

Totally get why my reactions might not seem important. But I thought a part of Matt’s appeal was that he spanned generations?

  • About time, Mr Chorley

Still not reached his zenith that he achieved at Times Radio, but a pretty good pod especially if you can’t listen to the show due to work etc. Insightful and funny content from Mr Matt Chorley of Somerset.

Loses the 5th star due to the inclusion of the boring Member of Matt’s Parliament feature, which is dull and boring. Who cares?

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Did Brexit break Britain?
Q: Did Brexit do something bigger to our politics, Vince, which is why prime ministers can't survive?
Brexit created residual anger and an almost impossible task for leaders to meet expectations, leading to frequent leadership changes and a perception of political instability.
What's Ken Clarke's advice for Keir Starmer?
Q: What will happen next week?
The discussion suggests Andy Burnham or other Labour figures may consolidate leadership moves, with continued scrutiny of Starmer's authority and potential shifts in Labour's strategy ahead of key by-elections.
What did Lorraine Kelly make of PMQs?
Q: Did the PM's problems stem from being too gloomy or aloof in the days after the election win?
Chris Ward responded that there will be time to review tactical decisions, but the reality is the government inherited significant challenges, and the focus should be on level with the country about the inheritance and situation rather than dwelling on blame.
Did Ken Clarke help England win the 1966 World Cup?
Q: Tell me then when that final whistle went, just the atmosphere inside Wembley when you realised that England had won the World Cup.
The guest describes a wild, ecstatic moment inside Wembley, highlighting the global significance and the personal thrill of witnessing England's victory firsthand.
Did QI's John Lloyd find PMQs Quite Interesting?
Q: What makes Hansard such a valuable resource for historians and the public?
The guests explained that Hansard provides a highly reliable, contemporaneous record of what was said, which can be verified and cross-referenced, helping to contextualize political events long after they happen.
