  • Dynamic Duo

Pam and Kim are a dynamic duo. I’m so grateful for their expertise and willingness to share with the rest of us. They have certainly impacted my classroom practice. I love that I can say, “Math is…” and my first graders respond “…figureoutable!” I hope they believe this to be true for the rest of their lives. Thanks Pam and Kim!

  • HOOKED!

From asynchronous professional development, to books, to this podcast, Pam and Kim make all listeners think and question, “is there another way?” I started listening and couldn’t stop. This podcast is my yard work companion and my dishwashing learning. I truly can’t get enough. Keep up the amazing work. I’m so excited to share all I learn with my colleagues and to try some of the younger standards with my own kids.

  • Amazing podcast!

I always thought I was good at math until I started listening to your podcast. Now I know I was good at mimicking and memorizing algorithms. The Mathisfigureoutable way makes so much more sense and I am addicted to learning more! Highly recommend!

  • Just in time Learning

I was not a podcast person until this year. I am a high school math teacher for 27 years who moved from being a mimicker to wanting my students to reason and explain their thinking without knowing that was what I was doing. This podcast helps me continue my journey to help more students think and reason. Thank you Kim and Pam, I look forward to binging this podcast.

  • Ed woo, not math

This is the most overrated podcast. It’s all educational feel good jargon , just current math ed woo. A reckoning is needed in the math space like has been occurring with literacy. There’s a reason the hosts stopped calling you all mathematicians and started calling you all “mathers.” Cringe. A real mathematician is not going to visualize a stack of dimes, next to a clock at 12 o clock, counting down a number line, and draw a chart to add a couple double digit numbers. Procedure and conceptual u... more

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 301: Factor Puzzles 2: Integers
Q: Can you remind everybody? Well, just tell us what you're thinking, and then we'll kind of go over the rules. Okay.
The essential rule demonstrated is that the two middle numbers must multiply to the top number and add to the bottom number; with 12 on top and 7 on the bottom, the pair is 4 and 3 (order doesn't matter).
Ep 266: Solving Proportions - Within & Between
Q: How do I help kids sort of write the equation of a line?
Help students understand that they can use relationships between different values, such as the number of packs to sticks, to derive equations like Y = 27X.
Ep 252: Foundations for Multi-Digit Multiplication & Division Strategies
Q: What are some tasks that we could sequence to help kids build the foundations for multi-digit multiplication and division?
Start with messy tasks, like providing a real-life context for multiplication and division, then sequence these with analyzing strategies.
Ep 190: The Problem With PEMDAS
Q: What is the figure-out-able-ness of PEMDAS?
This question leads to a discussion on the different ways to understand and teach order of operations, suggesting that it's not just about memory but about comprehension.
