Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

From Trial Strips to N Decisions: VRT Forum Insights
Q: When growers are asked whether VRT is worth the effort, what have the trial results shown about the benefits of tailoring inputs to different soil types across the paddock?
The trials demonstrated clear differences in outcomes between soil types, with some sites gaining yield and protein benefits from VRT, while poorer soils showed more variable results, underscoring the need to tailor inputs rather than apply broadly.
Keeping Sandy Soils in Place: Exploring dust control solutions with Shane Phillips – BioCentral Labs
Q: Can you just talk me through what those products are? We've got DustChek and AquaBoost and what you think we might see out in the paddocks this year.
DustChek is a polymer binding agent applied across the surface to bind soil particles and reduce drift, a concept adapted from mining; AquaBoost involves bacterial processes aimed at improving soil structure, with the potential to enhance crust stability and bind drift areas more effectively. In paddocks facing extreme drought and heat, we expect crusts to remain relatively stable under low traffic, with results varying by season, moisture, and application rate. Over time, repeated or sustained use may reduce maintenance needs as soil structure improves, though breakdown and rehydration dynamics mean rates may need adjustment.
What it takes to shape the future of Mallee farming
Q: How do you like to run meetings, Steve? And what do you reckon makes a good meeting and an organization function well?
A quick meeting with clear parameters where decisions are made and strategies are discussed is essential for effective board functioning.
What it takes to shape the future of Mallee farming
Q: Can you just explain a bit about what's involved and why do you reckon a farmer would want to join the board?
Burt highlights the importance of having farmers on the MSF board to influence the direction of the organization and contribute to relevant research.
