  • Civics 101

What I like most about this podcast is that Grant goes beyond the headlines into history. For example, in the Oct. 23 episode, we learned about the history of White House renovations — context for the bulldozing that’s happening there now. MIMS is smart, timely, and an important listen for anybody interested in the “why it matters” of today’s headlines.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

America Already Crossed the Line in Iran. What Happens Now? w/ Oona Hathaway
Q: What are the implications for international order if the US continues this path?
If the US persistently acts outside the international legal framework, it risks eroding global trust, empowering adversaries, and undermining long‑standing protections for civilians during conflicts.
America Already Crossed the Line in Iran. What Happens Now? w/ Oona Hathaway
Q: How do you reconcile the president's actions with the constitutional requirement that Congress declares war?
The letter and discussions emphasize that Congress has a fundamental role to authorize and fund war, and bypassing that process creates a legitimacy and accountability gap that endangers the rule of law.
America Already Crossed the Line in Iran. What Happens Now? w/ Oona Hathaway
Q: You were one of 100 professors who warned the US might be breaking the UN Charter in Iran. Do you still believe the US is currently breaking the law?
Yes, the UN Charter requires UN Security Council authorization or self‑defense, neither of which applies here, which continues to indicate a legal violation, reinforced by ongoing concerns about civilian harm and constitutional war powers.
They Can Take Your Citizenship Away — And the Trump Administration Is Trying
Q: Is there a playbook for protecting naturalized citizens if the political landscape shifts after the 2028 elections?
There isn't a clear, widely accepted playbook; options include constitutional amendments, statutes of limitations, and guaranteeing rights like legal representation in civil denaturalization, alongside ongoing litigation and advocacy to safeguard citizenship.
They Can Take Your Citizenship Away — And the Trump Administration Is Trying
Q: From a legal standpoint, how tricky is denaturalization as a tool to remove citizenship and deport people?
Denaturalization is legally complex, requiring evidence of fraud or wrongdoing with distinct standards for criminal (beyond a reasonable doubt) and civil (clear and convincing) cases, and is costly and time-consuming, which complicates rapid mass application.
