Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Bioimpedance Spectroscopy in Clinical Assessment
Q: What are the limitations of BIS and when should it not be used?
Limitations include reduced accuracy for patients with implantable devices or those without full limbs, calloused or dry skin affecting conductivity, and potential data artifacts if metal implants or movement influence readings. It should be integrated with other assessments rather than relied on as a single measure.
Bioimpedance Spectroscopy in Clinical Assessment
Q: Let's start at the beginning. For listeners not familiar with BIS, can you explain what BIS is and how it works?
BIS measures body fluids using multiple frequencies of an electrical signal, allowing us to estimate extracellular fluid, total body water, and intracellular fluid. This helps distinguish fluid shifts in different compartments and supports assessment of edema, hydration, and overall fluid balance alongside other clinical measures.
Lipoedema – Compression Strategies to Support Long-Term Management
Q: When do you usually start compression therapy for someone with Lymphoedema and what factors influence that timing?
Start compression after a comprehensive assessment to confirm edema, and consider staging, presence of inflammation, and patient readiness; in some cases, address non-edematous presentations first with nutrition and exercise to reduce inflammation before introducing compression.
Neuroscience and Engagement Strategies for Positive Outcomes
Q: From a neuroscience perspective, what is happening in the brain that can influence a patient's ability to engage with their care, particularly when stress or mental health challenges are present?
Stress activates the amygdala and triggers a fight-or-flight response, which reduces the efficiency of the prefrontal cortex; this undermines planning, memory, and following through with care, making it harder for patients to engage unless we reduce threat and simplify information.
From Recovery to Strength: Coaching and Exercise After Breast Cancer
Q: Could you walk us through perhaps a strategy that we could use, you know, one or two that might help us with that context of cancer recovery and getting us moving again?
A practical strategy is to start with a simple, repeatable practice that quiets the mind and lowers stress, such as a brief sensory exercise or breathing technique, paired with value tagging to connect activity to personally meaningful goals. Build a progressive program with small, achievable milestones that trigger dopamine through small wins, and make it enjoyable to boost oxytocin, which strengthens social connection and adherence.
