  • Something different

I have no idea how I came across this podcast. I don't know that I've ever known anyone who spent time in prison. But I've always believed they should be treated with dignity and respect and rehabilitated if possible. Thank you so much for bringing out the humanity in people who have in prison. The stories are fascinating and I hope they encourage people still in prison and people who are now their life on the outside.

  • Love the REAL stories

Long time listener here. I listen to nearly every episode from beginning to end, and am always intrigued. While I do want the best for Ian and Matt on this podcast, the newer episodes with the celebrity guests aren’t doing it for me. I’m sure it brings a lot of new listeners in which is great and all, but try not to forget about us listeners that are here for the real stories from the real ones that we’re down, not for these people that claim to pay their way through and “run” their hard time 🙄... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Inside the Illegal Wildlife Trade — A Crime You Never See | Monique Snosnowski
Q: What is America's fascination with having exotic wildlife as pets and how does that feed trafficking?
Fascination drives demand for status symbols and novelty; people often underestimate how dangerous and illegal it is to keep wild animals, and trafficking networks exploit these curiosities to move animals into private homes.
Inside the Illegal Wildlife Trade — A Crime You Never See | Monique Snosnowski
Q: Do you think it's not prioritized because it's more international, and what are you seeing in the US as a consumer country?
The US is a major consumer, and enforcement is hampered by a lack of education and inconsistent laws across states; domestic capacity is improving but gaps remain, especially for shipments that cross borders or travel through multiple jurisdictions.
Inside the Illegal Wildlife Trade — A Crime You Never See | Monique Snosnowski
Q: Tell us about the ivory trade that you first studied.
The ivory trade has been a long‑standing, highly profitable endeavor that has drawn in diverse actors, and my early work focused on its scale, the species involved, and the enforcement gaps that allow it to persist despite regulatory measures.
I Was Disabled in Prison — This Is How They Treated Me | Joseph Murphy
Q: What impact did the pardon have on your life and subsequent legal battles?
The pardon initially freed him from the worst consequences, but complex subsequent charges and appeals led to further legal battles and a long period of probation before he rebuilt his life in advocacy.
I Was Disabled in Prison — This Is How They Treated Me | Joseph Murphy
Q: What was it like growing up and deciding to pursue politics before your arrest?
Murphy explains a challenging upbringing with mental health struggles that shaped his early ambitions, including a desire to enter politics before the impulsive crime changed his course.
