Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

464. Q&A: Morning Baskets, Shy Children, & Tween Wanting Independence
Q: She has a 12-year-old girl who has been homeschooled from the beginning, currently finishing sixth grade. She is extremely bright and strong-willed. In the last year, she has been angry and expresses despair at the lack of control she has over her homeschool and life in general.
The host validates the emotional exhaustion parents feel and commends their efforts, then offers a plan focused on clear expectations, consistent consequences, and time for building relationship. She recommends quiet, assertive boundaries, involving both parents, using Bible-based discussions, and gradually increasing independence with structured checklists and planning skills. She also notes that failure to meet expectations can prompt consequences like redoing work, while acknowledging that a younger teen may need time and maturity to adapt.
464. Q&A: Morning Baskets, Shy Children, & Tween Wanting Independence
Q: Mission number two. Do you have any tips for helping a child that tends toward shyness? My oldest takes a very long time to warm up to people and often feels very shy in new settings or even in large groups. Sometimes I wonder if it's something I'm doing wrong and if he was in school, if that would help him.
The host discusses reframing shyness as a character formation issue, emphasizing gentle strategies like encouraging conversation about others, role-playing social scenarios, and praying for guidance. She suggests preparing children for social situations, asking open-ended questions, and modeling empathy and curiosity. Involving a supportive father figure can provide additional perspective, and bonding through shared faith-based discussions can ease tension and build confidence over time.
464. Q&A: Morning Baskets, Shy Children, & Tween Wanting Independence
Q: The first one says, I love the idea of using a morning basket for my preschooler next year, and he really loves being read to and has a good attention span. But morning baskets I see online often have like 15 books or activities they do each morning. Which all sounds awesome. But is it not a bit much for a little one to jumping so much from one thing to another? Would love advice for a morning basket for pre-K kindergarten age.
The host suggests narrowing to about three main focus areas rather than 15 activities, choosing a small, sustainable rotation. After finishing one resource, replace it with another, or set up a loop where certain days feature specific resources while others remain constant. The emphasis is on consistency and tailoring to the child's needs, with the caveat that you don't have to rigidly follow a large preset plan—prioritizing manners, memory verses, stories, and counting as core elements while staying flexible about implementation.
442. Q&A: Homeschooling A Strong-Willed Child, How Many Children To Have, And Telling Your Doctor You Homeschool
Q: How to deal with a strong-willed child in a homeschooling environment?
Leigh discusses balancing authority and suggests the involvement of the father in disciplining and guiding the child, emphasizing the importance of relationships and asking for divine wisdom.
442. Q&A: Homeschooling A Strong-Willed Child, How Many Children To Have, And Telling Your Doctor You Homeschool
Q: How to tell the child's doctor about choosing to homeschool?
Leigh suggests expressing confidence in their decision and that if the doctor has a negative view, they should consider finding a new doctor.
