  • Amazing Advocacy and Knowledge for the Play Therapy Field

This is exactly the kind of play therapy podcast we need in this emerging field! Incredible resource. One star lost due to the low sound quality - please consider changing your mic or editing software, it’s really out of balance and hard to listen to when the interviewer and interviewee are at different volumes. I would listen and recommend this every week, if you fixed the sound issues!

  • Bite-sized chunks of deeply important and informative therapeutic goodness

I love this podcast. As a new intern I’m constantly learning, questioning myself, wondering if I’m ok, what can I do better, what do I do well, what can I do with this kid or that kid… and so in and so on. This podcast offers me that and so much more. Plus, as an intern I simply can’t afford every cool training in the book, so this helps augment my education without dipping into the grocery budget! I love that it’s not hour(s) long and I can listen while driving to work or doing a quick clean on... more

  • Wishing all Play Therapy training was this good

The content is so rich and timely. I never fail

To learn something new I could implement immediately into my practice. I don’t know how Lisa Dion got to be so smart about children and how to best work with them. I only wish all play therapy education was at this high level.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Little Lessons Series: Listener Q&A with Lisa (Best of)
Q: How do you handle a child wanting to show their creation to a caregiver?
Evaluate whether the caregiver can hold the experience, and if they can't, guide the process with supportive redirection and cues to help the caregiver respond in a way that validates the child's effort while protecting the child from potential harm.
Little Lessons Series: Listener Q&A with Lisa (Best of)
Q: What should you do if a child lies or exaggerates their stories?
Focus on the felt sense and physiological arousal the story elicits, not the truth of the details; stay curious, validate emotions, and use the narrative to co-regulate and understand the child's internal experience.
Little Lessons Series: Listener Q&A with Lisa (Best of)
Q: What do you do if a child wants to bring food into the session?
Assess context and needs, consider timing and family dynamics, and offer foods with therapeutic relevance (like applesauce for nurturing or crunchy items for grounding), while ensuring safety and allergies are considered; the aim is to use the food to support regulation rather than merely serving as a distraction.
Books as Bridges: Co-Regulation and Attachment through Bibliotherapy with Tammi Van Hollander (Best of)
Q: How do you involve parents in bibliotherapy?
Often the parent or caregiver reads the book with the child or participates in a family session; some books require parental preview to ensure safety and alignment, and the parent-child co-reading can strengthen attachment and communication.
Books as Bridges: Co-Regulation and Attachment through Bibliotherapy with Tammi Van Hollander (Best of)
Q: What distinguishes developmental bibliotherapy from play-based bibliotherapy?
Developmental bibliotherapy is more school-oriented and top-down with an educational agenda, while play-based bibliotherapy integrates books into expressive therapies and sand play to trust the child's process and lead from their cues.
