  • NECESSARY for all educators!

Dr. Eakins covers everything that educators of today need to know if they’re serious about making a difference in the lives of ALL children. This podcast shows how educators can break through cultural, linguistic and socioeconomic barriers to make sure that all their students leave the classroom feeling empowered and able to grasp the material. If I were a principal, I’d send episodes of this podcast to my staff on a regular basis!

  • Invaluable Note-worthy guidance

Thankyou so much for guiding me in my anti racism journey. I am an art teacher in a predominantly white rural school district. I feel it is imperative that my students learn to be anti-rascist citizens of the world. I have stopped while listening to make many notes because your information is so valuable.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

LE 423: City vs. Suburbs: The Shocking Truth About School Funding
Q: What bill did they work toward and what did it entail?
The bill, known as evidence-based funding, sought to increase statewide funding, reduce dependence on local property taxes, and boost funds to high-need districts, with a phased implementation intended to close the funding gap over time.
LE 423: City vs. Suburbs: The Shocking Truth About School Funding
Q: Was there an initial goal in mind once that happened with recruiting teachers and campuses?
The team aimed to mix educator guidance with student voice, build relationships across close-but-separated districts, and create a pathway toward change by engaging in policy processes, including hands-on experiences and shared decision-making on which issues to tackle first.
LE 420: Why Everything You Know About School Discipline is WRONG!
Q: What would you tell teachers who fear retaliation for challenging policies?
Maintain integrity and frame actions as serving students, not opposing the system. Build coalition with colleagues and use documented conversations to show how policy adjustments benefit learning, which can protect the teacher while pushing for change.
LE 420: Why Everything You Know About School Discipline is WRONG!
Q: How do you balance district policies with student-centered rights?
You start from the student's perspective, using the dignity of each learner to justify adapting or pushing back on policy when it harms the student's ability to learn and feel safe. It often means advocating for alternatives within the system and prioritizing relationships and learning over rigid enforcement.
LE 420: Why Everything You Know About School Discipline is WRONG!
Q: Tell us about the Web of Rights and how it works in practice.
The Web of Rights is a framework built from the UN Charter of Rights for the Child and UNICEF, adapted for classrooms. It creates age-appropriate rights and co-constructed agreements (like a stoplight and a safety word) so students can navigate conflicts together with adults, reducing the need for blanket punitive responses.
