  • great podcast to discover music

I’ve been listening to this podcast since it launched, and it always managed to stick something new and interesting into my ears- The Evie Stokes version is a bit more focussed, which makes for extremely efficient listening- especially during a quick car trip- combined with the new weekly tuesday music update podcast with new album recs, KEXP has made a nice one-two punch for keeping up with new music releases…totally dig it…

  • This podcast works now!

After two format changes the podcasts focuses on a single new song, which is played in its entirety. KEXP DJs and musicians give interesting background about the music.

  • Full Songs Please

I typically love all things KEXP (especially the music obviously)... While the idea for the change from song of the day to "In Our Headphones" seems like it could be interesting, my immediate reaction after hearing the first episode is I would really like to hear the full versions of the songs instead of short previews. As of episode 1, this podcast primarily features discussions about what the KEXP crew is listening to with short clips of each song that fade in and out. Let's hear those full so... more

  • Excellent Reboot

“In Our Headphones” just switched hosts to Evie Stokes, one of KEXP’s very best DJs - she brings a warmth and passion for music that’s infectious. It’s also great to hear from other DJs on the show, and nice to hear from Chris Sanley and Alex Ruder as well, given their roles as tastemakers. Big improvement over the last version

DJ Kevin Sur on Youth Rock Band War Pigs and Their Anti-Fascist Anthem
Q: What makes War Pigs' music stand out, especially given the kids' ages, and what impact do you hope it has on listeners?
The combination of very young musicians with a powerful message about social justice and fighting fascism shows that youth voices can energize audiences and that music can be a vehicle for truth and positive change.
DJ Kevin Sur on Youth Rock Band War Pigs and Their Anti-Fascist Anthem
Q: How did War Pigs first come to KEXP's attention, and how did your relationship with their family influence that?“
Their dad was a friend from the LA punk scene; when the kids started posting music, I saw the potential and helped them gain exposure through Sounds of Revival and KEXP, forming a support network that led to played tracks and broader recognition.
DJ Kevin Sur on Youth Rock Band War Pigs and Their Anti-Fascist Anthem
Q: You brought a song that you're going to talk with us about and play for us. Can you tell us a bit more about how you discovered War Pigs?
I followed them because I knew their dad and had toured with him; they gradually released music that grew more polished, and the moment I heard their album I knew it needed to be shared, which is why I pushed them to put it on Bandcamp.
Mikaela Davis on the Genius of Melody’s Echo Chamber and Hayao Miyazaki
Q: You mentioned Miyazaki's quote; can you elaborate on how that philosophy informs your work?
She explains the concept of seeing through eyes unclouded by hate, applying that balance in her lyrics and production choices, and how it informs the emotional trajectory of her music.
Mikaela Davis on the Genius of Melody’s Echo Chamber and Hayao Miyazaki
Q: What is the meaning behind the album title Unclouded and its broader message?
Davis discusses that Unclouded relates to positivity and a new life-affirming chapter, inspired by Miyazaki's ideas, and she sees the record as encouraging listeners to release mental clutter and to balance light and dark in life.
