  • Salute to the Hosts

Listener recommendation: Go for the “Performance & Interview Only” option. That’s where the hosts shine. Cheryl, Kevin, Morgan, everybody — keep doing your thing.

  • Finally fixed sound quality

For a while there, this podcast sounded like it was recorded with a 32 bit MP3 stream. Finally back to the usual excellent sound quality! Don’t let this backslip again, KEXP!

  • So. Much. Talking.

I like this podcast because it has helped me find some new bands that I would not have discovered otherwise. In the last year or so they have added a “host” who talks. So. Much. I find myself skipping through large parts just to get to the actual music and avoid the host. It is really difficult to enjoy it any more. I hope this goes back to what it was which was a performance and not all the annoying morning FM DJ talking.

Talking Points

Softcult (Live on KEXP)
Q: Tell me about what this record is in its entirety.
Phoenix describes the album as a concept piece that starts with naivety and trauma and evolves through radicalization toward empowerment, aiming to tell a complete story when listened from start to finish.
Softcult (Live on KEXP)
Q: Can you talk about that?
Mercedes explains that the title of the album and its themes grew from a self-reflective process about authenticity and self-growth, noting that moving away from oppressive environments is essential for personal flourishing.
DRAMA (Live on KEXP)
Q: Now, here you are, Live on KEXP. How is everybody feeling today?
The duo responds with enthusiasm, saying they feel amazing and grateful to be there.
Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore (Live on KEXP)
Q: What was it like working with the rare instruments and the specific environment of the museum?
The harps from the 1700s are delicate and priceless, requiring careful handling and thoughtful miking; Trevor Spencer helped us figure out how to mic them and manage the gear, while we improvised and built demos in the moment to capture the energy of the space.
Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore (Live on KEXP)
Q: Can you talk a little bit about this once in a lifetime creative opportunity?
We were invited to record inside the Museum of Musical Instruments in Paris for 10 days, working on historic harps and synthesizers, with the idea of creating something that would feel true to the space and our time there, and it became the backbone of the album Tragic Magic.
