  • Salute to the Hosts

Listener recommendation: Go for the “Performance & Interview Only” option. That’s where the hosts shine. Cheryl, Kevin, Morgan, everybody — keep doing your thing.

  • Finally fixed sound quality

For a while there, this podcast sounded like it was recorded with a 32 bit MP3 stream. Finally back to the usual excellent sound quality! Don’t let this backslip again, KEXP!

  • So. Much. Talking.

I like this podcast because it has helped me find some new bands that I would not have discovered otherwise. In the last year or so they have added a “host” who talks. So. Much. I find myself skipping through large parts just to get to the actual music and avoid the host. It is really difficult to enjoy it any more. I hope this goes back to what it was which was a performance and not all the annoying morning FM DJ talking.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

The Barr Brothers (Live on KEXP)
Q: How did the recording process for Let It Hiss differ from previous records?
They predominantly worked in their own studio, embracing collaboration but avoiding over-engineering, bringing in a select group of contributors to fit the songs while prioritizing space and personal growth, which allowed the material to evolve more honestly.
Yuuf (Live on KEXP)
Q: Is there a future landscape or theme you're moving toward in your upcoming work, perhaps something far afield like the moon?
They're very thematic and always exploring concepts and color concepts; there's a sense that future work will continue to be driven by strong visual and thematic ideas, even if the exact landscape isn't fixed yet.
Yuuf (Live on KEXP)
Q: What should listeners pay attention to if they want to experience your music more actively rather than as background listening?
Active listening reveals layers and textures that aren't always obvious in a casual listen, and a live show amplifies energy and movement, making the listening experience more immersive.
Yuuf (Live on KEXP)
Q: How did writing the two EPs influence the concept behind the worlds you're creating, and did the landscape idea come before or during writing?
The landscapes emerged as part of the process, with songs like Iman and Ørken Bloom guiding the direction and the sense that two EPs could lead two worlds within one broader universe.
Yuuf (Live on KEXP)
Q: When you think of Alma's Cove and Mount Sava, how do you decide which song belongs to which landscape and where it fits in the broader universe?
They treat the two EPs as two linked yet distinct landscapes that can sit side by side in a single universe, with certain tracks serving as bridges or moments that define the moment in time.
