  • From a different type of director

Amazing show that I have recommended to several of my students who want to go into filmmaking.

I am not in the filmmaking community, but I am a band director and stills photographer who very much enjoys the industry.

These guys are entertaining, dynamic, and enthusiastic about sharing their directing experiences with this community. They choose relevant guests and include just the right amount of sarcasm (wooo).

I also thoroughly enjoy unpaid endorsements!

Thank you guys for all you do.

  • A Filmmaker’s Journey Worth Following

I started listening to these guys back in 2016. It was their 50th episode entitled “A Tale of Two Orens.” Six years later, they’re well over 300 episodes and I’m still listening. It’s a podcast for erstwhile filmmakers hungry to “make it.” The ironic beauty of this successful podcast is that Matt

  • Constantly Valuable

I think I’ve listened to at least 50 episodes and I find value in everyone. There are so many tips and pieces of inside knowledge that you probably can’t get anywhere else when it comes to commercial directing. On a programming note I love the flow that comes with each episode. A lot of film podcasts have a way getting way off topic and it eats away at the run time. This duo are like ying and yang they balance each other out so well and usually spotlight both sides of the coin with each topic. ... more

Listener Strikes Gold w/‘The Travel Companion’ from Travis Wood & Alex Mallis - Just Shoot It 520
Q: What did success look like for you during and after production?
For us, success was simply finishing a 90-minute film and seeing it reach audiences. Distribution and festival recognition were welcomed, but the core satisfaction came from completing the project and building momentum for future work.
Listener Strikes Gold w/‘The Travel Companion’ from Travis Wood & Alex Mallis - Just Shoot It 520
Q: What was your strategy for balance between authenticity and production value on a tight budget?
We prioritized doing things that felt true to our DIY roots—shooting lean, choosing meaningful locations, and using blocking and long takes to keep the narrative engaging without overreaching the budget. The focus was on storytelling and energy rather than big production jumps.
Listener Strikes Gold w/‘The Travel Companion’ from Travis Wood & Alex Mallis - Just Shoot It 520
Q: How did you approach getting your first investors and funding for a debut feature?
We started with a dozen close connections and film-adjacent people, framing it as patronage rather than stock investment. We offered modest amounts, clarity about the journey, and kept everyone in the loop, which helped us raise small, manageable sums and maintain creative control.
Bringing "Palestine 36" to Life w/ Annemarie Jacir - Just Shoot It 522
Q: What is the controversy surrounding the film, and why did you decide to tackle this story now?
The guests discuss the political sensitivities around Palestine 36, why it was controversial in some places, and how the film aims to humanize its characters beyond political labels.
Bringing "Palestine 36" to Life w/ Annemarie Jacir - Just Shoot It 522
Q: Are you purely coming from a place of what's going to make this a great movie or what sort of obligation do you feel to historical accuracy when you're making those creative decisions?
Jacir explains she balances responsibility to history with artistic storytelling, aiming to be historically correct while using poetic license to service the narrative and character arcs.
