  • From a different type of director

Amazing show that I have recommended to several of my students who want to go into filmmaking.

I am not in the filmmaking community, but I am a band director and stills photographer who very much enjoys the industry.

These guys are entertaining, dynamic, and enthusiastic about sharing their directing experiences with this community. They choose relevant guests and include just the right amount of sarcasm (wooo).

I also thoroughly enjoy unpaid endorsements!

Thank you guys for all you do.

  • A Filmmaker’s Journey Worth Following

I started listening to these guys back in 2016. It was their 50th episode entitled “A Tale of Two Orens.” Six years later, they’re well over 300 episodes and I’m still listening. It’s a podcast for erstwhile filmmakers hungry to “make it.” The ironic beauty of this successful podcast is that Matt

  • Constantly Valuable

I think I’ve listened to at least 50 episodes and I find value in everyone. There are so many tips and pieces of inside knowledge that you probably can’t get anywhere else when it comes to commercial directing. On a programming note I love the flow that comes with each episode. A lot of film podcasts have a way getting way off topic and it eats away at the run time. This duo are like ying and yang they balance each other out so well and usually spotlight both sides of the coin with each topic. ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Manifesting a "Fantasy Life" w/Matthew Shear - Just Shoot It 529
Q: How did you approach assembling the cast for a first feature with limited financing?
I leaned on close friends and trusted collaborators, including casting veteran Doug Able, and used letters to reach actors; Amanda Peet came aboard through network connections and a strategic focus on vulnerability.
Manifesting a "Fantasy Life" w/Matthew Shear - Just Shoot It 529
Q: What inspired you to write Fantasy Life and pursue directing your own feature?
I was creatively unhappy after a high and then a major low in my acting career, which pushed me to dive into writing as a form of necessity and to pursue directing as a way to tell a deeply personal story.
Agency Month w/Joe Saroufim from Kimmelot - Just Shoot It 527
Q: How has the role of the creative director evolved in advertising across platforms?
Joe explains that the core creative concept remains the guiding force, but must be adaptable across social, broadcast, and digital formats, with a strong emphasis on core strategy and cross-platform consistency.
Agency Month w/Greg Kort of Doner - Just Shoot It 528
Q: How is AI affecting treatment creation and image selection?
AI can help generate concepts and speed up ideation, but there is concern that it may strip away the human, magical element of seeing a concept come to life on camera.
Agency Month w/Greg Kort of Doner - Just Shoot It 528
Q: What makes a good reel or treatment, and how important is the director's personality in a treatment?
Personality in the treatment helps convey how the director will approach the job; directors should inject themselves into the treatment rather than deliver a read, which clients respond to.
