The four seasons that most of us follow—winter, spring, summer and autumn—were developed in the northern hemisphere and were brought to Australia by Europeans. But First Nations people across Australia have recognised seasons in different ways for th... more

Many years ago, I began noticing some serious impacts on bushland following planned burns, or fuel-reduction burns. I was seeing the loss of old trees, destruction of rare and threatened plants, loss of habitat, and impacts on native fauna.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

E12 – Muirburn: Fire Management in the Heather Moorlands of the U.K - with Matt Davies
Q: How has fire shaped the Heather Moorlands over millennia, and what are the dominant factors today?
Fire, grazing, and human management have interacted for thousands of years to create mosaic landscapes; burning is used to maintain open habitats and tailor habitat structure for species like grouse, with current practices balancing ecological and cultural considerations.
E13: Singing for the Baarka (Darling River) – with Sean McConnell
Q: What inspired the Baarka Ballad and its focus on the Darling River?
Sean explains the fish kills, water mismanagement, floodplain harvesting, and broader river degradation as motivations, and discusses how the song uses imagery and news footage to communicate the urgency of ecological and cultural loss.
E11 – Restoring Floodplain Forests & Wetlands of the Riverina – with Kate Bennetts
Q: I'd love to ask you about just quite recently, you've I think you've kind of started to find a really important part of the story, which you can tell the story. But I think what you said to me was that this started when you stumbled across a paper from the 1970s looking at the effect of red gum leaves, the terpenes, which I think was done in California. Do you want to tell us about the, I think you've been making red gum leaf tea, haven't you?
Kate discusses the discovery that red gum leaves contain germination-suppressing compounds (terpenes/allelopathic chemicals). She explains how experiments showed strong suppression at higher concentrations, and how seasonal leaf fall and microbial breakdown modulate the effect, offering a potential explanation for past wetland plant recruitment patterns.
E11 – Restoring Floodplain Forests & Wetlands of the Riverina – with Kate Bennetts
Q: Maybe to start off with, do you feel like describing some of the riverine ecosystems we're gonna be talking about today in terms of what do they look like, where do they occur and how they function?
Kate explains the Murray riverine systems in focus, detailing the floodplain forests, wetlands, plant communities from grey box to red gum zones, and how water regimes shape who lives there. She emphasizes the dependence on seasonal flooding, the flat meandering landscape, and the connection between water pulses and ecological productivity.
E24: The Myth of Fuel Reduction - with Associate Professor Phil Zylstra
Q: To start off with, maybe I'm curious to hear a bit about your background, like how you came into this space of looking into fire ecology and questioning some of the conventional thinking around fire management.
Phil explains how his hands-on experience as a remote area firefighter and his fieldwork informed his skepticism of universal burn prescriptions, leading him to develop more nuanced fire-behavior insights that account for landscape-specific variables.
