  • Great review

Orthopedic resident here. Look forward to this every month! Great summary of some of the articles but I really enjoy the interviews with the authors of the featured article. It’s interesting to hear the person/people behind these articles describe the process and their story

  • Perfect!

Concise summaries of relevant journal articles, author interviews, and the occasional special segment. Geared toward ortho residents but could easily be appreciated by multiple audiences (e.g. APPs, med students). The anecdotal/conversational style makes it easy to keep up with while commuting or doing mindless chores (I find the orthobullets podcast to be too monotone, information-dense and choppy). The author interviews offer insight into the current research landscape & varying institutional ... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 90: Comparison of Iliac Crest Autograft and Alternative Bone Grafts in the Treatment of Nonunion: A Retrospective Study
Q: What about donor-site morbidity and intraoperative culture results?
Donor-site morbidity was generally low with most issues resolving quickly; intraoperative cultures were positive in about 5% of cases, yet healing with autograft remained excellent and even higher than in culture-positive cases using other grafts.
Episode 90: Comparison of Iliac Crest Autograft and Alternative Bone Grafts in the Treatment of Nonunion: A Retrospective Study
Q: What were the main outcomes you looked at and what did you find?
Primary outcomes were healing after one intervention and time to union; the autograft group reached about 96% healing versus about 87% for alternatives, with the autograft also achieving faster union by roughly two months.
Episode 90: Comparison of Iliac Crest Autograft and Alternative Bone Grafts in the Treatment of Nonunion: A Retrospective Study
Q: Can you tell me a little bit about the design and how the cohorts were put together?
The study was a retrospective review of prospectively collected data, comparing Iliac Crest Bone Graph versus all other graft sources, with minimum one-year follow-up and over 500 long-bone nonunions analyzed for healing outcomes and time to union.
Episode 88: Surgeons on Social Media: Dissecting the Impact of Social Media Across Orthopaedic Subspecialties
Q: What were the main practical takeaways for surgeons building a practice?
Be intentional and authentic, start small with 1-2 platforms, align your online presence with patient demographics and professional goals, and avoid performative branding that undermines trust.
Episode 88: Surgeons on Social Media: Dissecting the Impact of Social Media Across Orthopaedic Subspecialties
Q: How did you design the study to ensure broad representation across subspecialties and practice settings?
A cross-sectional design sampling active members from seven subspecialty societies, across all 50 states, using publicly available data from multiple patient-facing and professional platforms, with careful identity verification.
