Dr Andrea Wallace: All about EMDR
Q: Is EMDR only for trauma, or can it help with memories from OCDs childhood or non-traumatic distress?
EMDR isn't limited to trauma; it can target painful memories from various life events, including childhood experiences relevant to OCD, and can reduce distress even when memories are not PTSD-specific.
Dr Andrea Wallace: All about EMDR
Q: When would you actually use EMDR instead of ERP?
EMDR can be used to process unprocessed memories related to OCD and to build positive beliefs, making ERP more approachable by reducing the distress linked to intrusive thoughts and past experiences; it can be used for real event OCD and to reframe fears before exposure.
Monique Michelson: A neuroaffirming psychologist with ASD, ADHD and OCD
Q: How do you distinguish between autistic symptoms and OCD symptoms?
Monique advised focusing on the quality of the behavior and the individual's experience, noting that OCD obsessions often involve irrational fears, while autistic behaviors may be related to sensory regulation.
Monique Michelson: A neuroaffirming psychologist with ASD, ADHD and OCD
Q: What are some of the challenges of having multiple diagnoses?
Monique explained that having both autistic and OCD traits can create conflicting coping mechanisms and increase anxiety, while ADHD may contribute to impulsivity and distractibility that exacerbates OCD tendencies.
Monique Michelson: A neuroaffirming psychologist with ASD, ADHD and OCD
Q: What made you want to get into this profession originally?
