  • Okay

Seems a little amateur and haphazard relative to the Inside Politics podcast. Cliff is a nice guy but seems to dodge every second question and doesn’t seem especially informed. The interviewer is not especially likeable either.

  • This is one of my favourite podcasts. Ciaran Hancock always does a great job interviewing consistently interesting guests who provide real insights into business in Ireland and beyond. Production and editorial standards of the highest quality. The Irish Times can be proud of this.

  • Enough with the Gotcha journalism

I generally enjoy the detail and discussions during this podcast, but at times the host can be argumentative and condescending towards the guests, it’s exhausting to listen to.

I understand that the host wants to challenge the guests on numbers, facts and plans (they are all professionals after all), but it appears at times that the host wants to employ “gotcha” questioning, please stop.

The guests discuss adjustments to USC, potential changes to the standard rate band, and the likelihood of increasing tax credits, noting the cost implications and the need to balance relief with broader fiscal constraints.
Are middle earners getting gouged by the tax system here?
Q: What matters to people is the difference between gross pay and take-home pay, and how the tax system interacts with USC and PRSI?
Cliff explains the mechanics of the tax take-home calculation, explaining how credits and USC affect take-home pay and why many feel squeezed, especially when wage increases don't translate into proportional increases after tax.
Are middle earners getting gouged by the tax system here?
Q: Yes or no? Tell us everything you know.
Cliff Taylor confirms the extent of the debate and outlines the key points around how the tax system impacts the middle earners, especially regarding USC, marginal rates, and credits, setting the stage for deeper discussion.
Should Meta's 'intrusive' smart glasses be banned?
Q: What might happen if windfall corporation tax revenue declines—could Ireland revert to a deficit without the current cushion?
They discuss the existence of reserve funds but emphasize that without windfall taxes, the budget would look very different, suggesting ongoing infrastructure investments will need to be funded elsewhere.
Should Meta's 'intrusive' smart glasses be banned?
Q: Has anybody wargamed what would happen to the Irish extractor finances if, for example, an Apple, Eli Lilly, or Microsoft was to pull out or their corporation tax revenues were to drop by 5 billion?
The guests explain that a fall in corporation tax would also impact payroll taxes and VAT, with broader spending consequences, and that the government has saved funds but still faces a line in the sand on spending versus revenue.
