  • Gave up

I gave up listening to an hour long podcast on the evolution of insurance after 20 minutes of small talk between the hosts. I want to listen to learn about the topic not to hear about how they worked at xyz and whether or not they deliver alcohol in some American town.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Adapting Commercial Auto Insurance to Platform-Based Work
Q: What's the status and outlook for autonomous vehicles in your plans?
Autonomous vehicles present a major opportunity; the products must cover maintenance, cleaning, and ongoing operations. Insurance will need to adapt with data-led, flexible solutions as these vehicles become more prevalent, with embedded, usage-based models well-positioned for this shift.
Adapting Commercial Auto Insurance to Platform-Based Work
Q: Why focus on platform partnerships and embedded insurance, and how has that shaped your product design?
Partnering with platforms like Uber and others allows Insure to embed coverage into onboarding and daily workflows, making insurance more accessible and affordable for drivers and fleets. We designed usage-based products that price by exposure (minutes, deliveries, rides) and created in-house claims to improve efficiency and trust.
Adapting Commercial Auto Insurance to Platform-Based Work
Q: Tell us about the origin of Insure and how your early ideas evolved into the MGA model you use today.
The initial Expedia/Kayak-style aggregator idea proved untenable due to difficulty partnering with traditional insurers and pricing under disparities, so we pivoted to become an MGA. This shift taught us about underwriting, capacity partnerships, and distribution through platforms, ultimately enabling more flexible, embedded products.
The Role of Insurance in a Climate-Uncertain Future
Q: How would you maybe compare and contrast in terms of innovation cultures that you've seen?
Dominique discusses the challenges innovators face, particularly within Japanese life insurance culture, emphasizing that life insurance often involves long-term risks that require cautious consideration before innovating.
How Insurance is Transforming the Hospitality Industry with Andrew Bate from VelarisRe
Q: Can you talk about the technology piece that you built at Safely?
Bate explains that they integrated technology into property management systems to create mini insurance policies that activate during rentals, emphasizing the embedding of insurance into customer experiences.
