Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Projects Fail Before Construction Starts (And How to Fix It)
Q: How do you see the role of AI and machine learning impacting cost estimating in the near future?
AI will handle recognizing and pricing known items, but the true differentiator remains the estimator's ability to imagine what isn't shown, assess non-documented risks, and propose context-aware solutions that keep the project on track while preserving the vision.
Why Projects Fail Before Construction Starts (And How to Fix It)
Q: What is the biggest value an estimator brings to a project team beyond math?
Beyond numbers, the estimator acts as a risk-aware advocate who communicates uncertainties and options clearly, helping the team negotiate risk, budget, and schedule early so the project can proceed with confidence and alignment.
Why Projects Fail Before Construction Starts (And How to Fix It)
Q: You mentioned that imagination and early-stage thinking are essential to kick off a project. How does an estimator begin transforming abstract concepts into a credible budget?
Estimates start with translating rough program data and concept sketches into quantities and unit costs, then progressively refine by identifying gaps (like systems and infrastructure not yet shown) and asking the right questions to owners and designers to close those gaps with feasible solutions.
Stop Drifting. Start Directing.
Q: What does it take to implement the GTD system in practice, especially for someone new to it?
Implementation starts with capturing everything on one's mind, then clarifying what each item requires, organizing items into actionable lists, and finally maintaining a regular review cadence, including a daily processing hour and a weekly review to stay aligned with priorities.
Stop Drifting. Start Directing.
Q: Who have you found has been most attracted to your work, and what kinds of readers or participants tend to engage most with GTD?
The people most attracted to GTD are already successful but feel crowded or constrained by their space and need room to think clearly; they often are high-achievers like CEOs or prominent executives who want more mental space to unlock higher performance.
