Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dave Maddux (Guitar Center Vintage Repairs)
Q: What was the idea behind writing up the criteria for Fender guitars, and why did it matter?
Creating written specs for neck bow, nut height, bridge height, and other parameters allowed the guitars to be reproduced consistently, moving away from subjective judgments toward precise, repeatable performance across all units.
Dave Maddux (Guitar Center Vintage Repairs)
Q: Tell me about the transition from CBS to the new ownership and how that affected production.
CBS prioritized numbers over quality, which conflicted with the people on the line; after a buyout, the company downsized, moved to a Corona site, rebuilt from CBS remnants, hired new people, and established manufacturing that emphasized repeatability and actual player-focused quality.
Dave Maddux (Guitar Center Vintage Repairs)
Q: But maybe just in your own words, give us a little bit of your story.
I started at Fender in the mid-70s after a local band path, painting guitars and moving through tune testing, QA, amps, and pianos; a long journey shaped by hands-on learning and adapting to production needs, culminating in a deep knowledge of what makes a guitar reliable and playable.
Andy Powers (Taylor Guitars)
Q: What problem did you set out to solve with the neck and bracing innovations?
The goal was to create instruments that are easily adjustable, mechanically stable, and capable of sounding great in a wide range of playing styles, while staying familiar to traditionalists.
Andy Powers (Taylor Guitars)
Q: How did you come to join Taylor and take on a leadership role?
I was invited after a candid conversation about aligning my craft with a broader mission, realizing I could impact thousands of families by helping design guitars that would inspire more players.
