The format of Inside Out is simple - Jim Bennett is still on the inside of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Ian Wilks is on the outside of the Church. Yet both care about the Church and its future, and both want to see constructive dialogue between those who stay and those who leave. Hopefully, all of us can come to a better understanding of the Church and of each other.

  • Eye Roller

I thought John Dehlin was the biggest LDS Church whiner until I started listening to this podcast. Bennett is the inside guy? Are you sure?

  • Disappointed

I’ve been listening consistently but the last episode about Elder Holland was stunningly bad and disappointing. To assert (without fact) that he basically gave his famous Book of Mormon talk, as a way to convince himself of the Book of Mormon’s truthfulness as weird and disappointing. To assert he gave talks that he didn’t believe in his own writing and spoke words. Why say things that are so wildly inflammatory and unsubstantiated?

  • Taking a Break

I was thrilled when this podcast first started and eagerly looked forward to each new weekly episode. Finally—an honest and respectful space for real conversations about concerns in the church! I loved Ian’s story and have cheered for the guests who are trying to make things better, while also shedding tears for those who’ve been hurt by the organization. I’ve related to almost every guest you’ve had on.

But Jim, I just can’t with the politics anymore. And before you judge me (because I know yo... more

  • Refreshing perspective

“Change in an Unchanging Church” has a lot of important points and information that struck several chords for me.

I also recently finished watching all 9 episodes of “An Inconvenient Faith” docuseries.

Wow! Thank you for sharing all your research and knowledge. Thank you for the years of work and sacrifice to bring it to the rest of us.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Roadmap 2.0
Q: Do you agree with the assessment that the church resists change due to fear or theological constraint, and how would you respond to the accusation that grassroots suggestions are not welcome?
The guests suggest that change often happens only when ideas gain traction at the grassroots; criticism framed as faithlessness is counterproductive, and there is a need for a transparent, living process where good ideas—whether from members or scholars—can be examined and refined rather than suppressed.
A Conversation with Byron Casper
Q: What lessons from your mission and upbringing do you carry into your current life and career?
Byron emphasizes authenticity, presence, and following one's own path; he discusses blending faith with personal beliefs, the value of being present, and leveraging discipline to build a legacy across golf, teaching, and entrepreneurship.
Ian Returns to Newbykipps
Q: Has your perspective on that story changed since you have left the church?
Yes, I've learned that that experience is not exclusive to the Mormon Church.
Richard Bushman Returns!
Q: Is there anything you'd like to share with the world about the Prophet Joseph Smith that you haven't yet shared?
There are layers and layers. It'll take many generations to get through to his true inner character.
A Conversation with Ganesh Cherian and Greg Prince
Q: Was Joseph Smith a believer?
His journey reflects a complex narrative of faith intertwined with societal dynamics and personal experiences, suggesting he saw himself as a hero of his own story.
