Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Dr. Glenn Fleisig: Director of Biomechanics Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute
Q: Well, Dr. Fleisig, shifting gears a bit, I want to talk a bit about your new interval throwing program, which was voted best paper at the 2024 Major League Baseball Team Physicians and Athletic Trainers meeting. Give us some background on the paper, the research and what makes this approach different from stuff we've seen before.
The new interval throwing program modernizes the traditional approach by correlating workload data with biomechanical measurements, creating a more balanced, steady progression that reduces peaks and setbacks. It was led by Mike Reinold with Kevin Wilk and Dr. Andrews, and it tailors day-by-day throws to optimize elbow health while maintaining rehab goals.
Dr. Glenn Fleisig: Director of Biomechanics Research at the American Sports Medicine Institute
Q: Sure. And within the research with the athletic trainers, and today so much is going on in that realm, whether it's Marklis motion capture, in-game data, pitching lab data you're collecting, can you talk a bit about how technology is really changing the way you can measure and understand what's actually going on with throwing of the baseball, and also how you incorporate the athletic trainers with that as well.
Technology has expanded from lab-based capture to in-stadium data collection, enabling real-time or near-real-time insights. The key is to keep specialists in their lanes while translating complex data into practical, actionable guidance for athletic trainers, pitching coaches, and rehab staff so that insights are usable on the field and in training rooms.
Brandon Zumbach: Astros Minor League Medical Coordinator
Q: How do you manage communication across front office, affiliates, and team physicians, and how has this evolved with the new leadership in Houston?
Communication is continuous and multi-layered, with daily updates among affiliates, regular check-ins with team physicians, and strategic collaboration with the front office to support players and staff across the organization.
Brandon Zumbach: Astros Minor League Medical Coordinator
Q: What were your roles when you broke in and how did you advance to the Astros?
He started as a short-season athletic trainer in Tri-City, then moved up through roles in different organizations, with unpaid internships preceding paid opportunities, and ultimately earned a full-time position with the Astros and progressed to his current coordinator role.
Dr. Amy Beacom: Minnesota Twins Team Physician
Q: How did you break in at the beginning, talk about your path and then also getting into working with the twins specifically?
She describes building her career step by step, moving from emergency medicine into sports medicine, navigating mentorship, and gradually integrating with the Twins through a combination of prior connections and demonstrated capability, ultimately becoming a lead medical figure within the organization.
