  • Not just women tho

I love almost everything about this podcast, but I don’t get why the hosts continue to refer to pregnant people unilaterally as “women”. Abortion rights, reproductive justice, and pregnancy don’t impact all women, and do impact trans men and some nonbinary people.

Episode 81: MLM Nation with Bridget Read
Q: How ingrained in American life are they? Do they exist everywhere or are they really more present in certain areas?
MLMs are everywhere and it's likely the true scope is unknown. There have been periods where one in eight Americans were involved in them, and they have expanded significantly overseas since the 1980s.
Episode 81: MLM Nation with Bridget Read
Q: Can I ask about the gender politics of all this?
The MLM scheme opens the system up to affinity fraud, preying on housewives and using trust networks, as women once involved in the traditional selling had a much weaker hand, which allowed MLM to present itself as empowerment while subtly reinforcing patriarchal structures.
