熊鷹，台灣體重最重的留棲性猛禽，雌鳥可達3.4公斤。牠棲息於中低海拔的山林深處，因為體型壯碩，覓食時多半安靜地停在樹枝上靜候獵物，少在空中飛行，連長期賞鳥的人都很難一睹真容。

苗栗通霄鎮的新埔，是一個靠海、只有約5平方公里的小聚落，但就在這片不到5平方公里的土地上，分布著台灣破傘菊、漏盧、新竹油菊等超過17種的珍稀受脅植物，密度是全台平均的125倍，是名副其實的「熱點中的熱點」。

20年前，教授黃武雄、作家小野、生態作家徐仁修聯名發起一場公民行動，倡議連起一條環島的千里步道，也催生出「台灣千里步道協會」。
20年後，這場運動已經長成涵蓋手作步道、長距離綠道、國際交流三大主軸的環境網絡。今年（2026年）4月，運動20週年之際，協會也同步舉辦第五屆「榮譽步道師」頒獎典禮。
