Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Parents' experiences and expectations of SLT services for autistic children in Munster
Q: What motivated you to explore parents' lived experiences with speech and language therapy and why IPA was chosen?
The motivation came from clinical experience and a desire to understand how families actually navigate services, especially during wider discussions about autism service reconfiguration and system delays. IPA was chosen for its depth, allowing exploration of individual life contexts and the meaning families ascribe to their experiences.
IASLT In Conversation - New Graduate SLT
Q: What inspired you to become a speech and language therapist?
A mix of influences including a love for human health, communication, language, and seeing tangible progress in a family friend who benefited from SLT; the realization that SLT could help people advocate for themselves confirmed the path.
Anne Horgan and Anne Tangney: Retired SLT Managers
Q: What was the profession like in Ireland when you first started?
Anne Horgan explains there were very few practitioners, limited public awareness, and the profession was still often confused with
Zelda Greene, Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in Neonatology
Q: What developments or innovations in neonatal SLT practice do you see for the future?
There's growing recognition that therapists should be embedded in all Level 3 units, development of outcome measures that go beyond weight gain to include engagement and happiness, and a stronger emphasis on neuroprotection and family-integrated care guiding practice and transition to community services.
Zelda Greene, Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist in Neonatology
Q: Can you tell us now what your day-to-day work looks like as a clinical specialist in neonatology and how it differs from SLT roles in other paediatric settings?
I am the sole SLT in the building, so I oversee the entire unit, manage a wide range of cases from complex breathing support to feeding and positioning, participate in daily neonatal team meetings, and balance clinical work with documentation and policy development.
