  • Content 5 stars- Audio 2 stars

I really enjoy the topics, host and guest speakers however the audio is unlistenable. I am not sure if it’s a mic issue but before every speaker, you can hear their inhale almost as a very loud distracting gasp. I have to turn off every episode that it happens on. Which is a shame because the content is so great. I listen to a lot of content and have not heard this on other pods.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Improving Succession Planning: Why it Feels like a Fire Drill and How to Fix It
Q: Who should own the conversations about succession within an organization?
Leaders must own the conversations and be the face of it; HR designs the framework, but leadership drives the ongoing discussions, sets expectations, and communicates the plan across the organization.
Improving Succession Planning: Why it Feels like a Fire Drill and How to Fix It
Q: What is a practical question leaders can ask their teams this week to start reframing succession planning?
Ask: 'Who do we quietly rely on all the time?' This question surfaces hidden dependencies and helps teams think about a bench, potential replacements, and emergency backfills without implying levels or roles.
Improving Succession Planning: Why it Feels like a Fire Drill and How to Fix It
Q: How should a company structure the process to avoid bias and ensure fairness?
Use a cross-functional, cross-level committee with data-driven evaluations; involve peers to provide broader perspectives, and have guardrails and standardized criteria to minimize halo bias, recency bias, and other human biases.
Improving Succession Planning: Why it Feels like a Fire Drill and How to Fix It
Q: Why is it important to distinguish between replacement planning and succession planning?
Replacement is about filling a single chair with a specific skill set, while succession planning builds a bench of people across roles who can collectively take the organization forward, ensuring continuity even when multiple changes occur and expanding the pool of future leaders.
Improving Succession Planning: Why it Feels like a Fire Drill and How to Fix It
Q: What inspired you to shift how organizations think about succession planning and move away from the 'fire drill' mindset?
A pregnant, high-risk client facing maternity leave conversations revealed the fear of relinquishing control; that moment showed me how critical it is to normalize succession as a regular, value-preserving practice rather than a panic response, and to develop a framework that supports ongoing dialogue and clarity.
