  • Not sure what it wants to be

This is an interesting podcast and as I listened through the backlist it covers many movies and the history around them. But since the beginning of the year I have watched for new episodes about movies and they are getting fewer and fewer. The pod seems to have decided to go a different direction. I have no problem with the new episodes but it’s kind of a bait and switch. It’s no longer what I signed on for so I am parting ways.

  • Refund my time

Listened to 3 episodes I thought I’d like. Conversations went short or without structure. Didn’t come away with any information more than I came with. A host who is annoying. The idea is good but I want my time back.

  • Fun, Historical, & Brilliant

This is a pod that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but seriously does an outstanding job of bringing together the world of film & history. It’s not boring or always holding filmmakers to task for not being historically accurate, but instead helps us think about how history informs our movie making and how our movie making informs are historical memory. Guests are scholars who know their stuff, but are normal people who make their work accessible. Jason is a great host, who asks thoughtful que... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Episode 199: First in War, Last of His Kind: H.W. Brands on George Washington
Q: How do you reconcile Washington's legacy as a founder with his status as a slaveholder?
The key is to show the historical context: the institution of slavery was integral to the economy and social structure of Virginia at the time, and Washington's actions and eventual ambivalence reflect the complicated transition many founders faced as they navigated a nation built on ideals of liberty while existing within a slaveholding society.
Episode 199: First in War, Last of His Kind: H.W. Brands on George Washington
Q: What initially drew you to write about George Washington straight on, after exploring so many other biographies?
I wanted to write about a figure whose life could illuminate how America emerged as a nation, and I felt Washington's life offered the clearest through-line from colonial times to an independent republic, especially when I could place him inside the real human experiences documented in letters and records.
Episode 198: Honor, Fear, and the Green Knight: Matt Gabriele on Arthurian Myth and Medieval Masculinity
Q: Better medieval hero, this Gawain or Monty Python's Lancelot?
Gawain is seen as more interesting and complex, a straighter line of growth and moral struggle than the more anarchic, satirical Lancelot; the film treats Gawain as a work in progress whose choices reveal genuine humanity.
Episode 195: How The Fast and Furious Franchise Remade Hollywood
Q: Are you a fan of The Fast and the Furious yourself?
Yes, I'm a tremendous fan for many of the reasons the guest highlights, including how the franchise evolves over time and reflects audience and studio dynamics.
Episode 197: Soylent Green Explained: Eco-Dystopia, Climate Anxiety, and the 1970s That Still Haunt Us
Q: How do Carson and Cronenberg fit into the broader environmental discourse featured in your book?
Carson's work shows how environmental fear is communicated through rhetoric and metaphor, while Cronenberg translates those concerns into corporeal, body-centric horror, highlighting borders between inside and outside the human body and linking ecological danger to bodily vulnerability.
