I’m biased because I’m a trained historian, but hopefully my perspective helps people understand something wonderful about this great podcast. The wonderful thing about this podcast is how it frequently feels like all the best parts of being in a grad school seminar*. There’s witty banter, deep questions, push and pull across interlocutors, grappling with the human condition, jokes that would make any 12yr old boy proud. Basically, this podcast is like a little snapshot of the priceless componen... more
I usually really like this podcast, but this ep was painful to listen to. Corny cringey “humor”, totally uninteresting/irrelevant (to the topic) guest, and honestly just straight up rude to Russians about their history with all the pithy comments about how “crazy” it has “always” been. A real low point for an otherwise usually smart, fun, educational, intelligently critical show.
A list of sensitive topic should be followed by Warning: listening to this podcast may lead to excessive spending on history books
It’s cool to get a different perspective on famous historical figures. So often they are only described in the rosiest of terms. The show really looks at them from a different perspective that is probably more realistic on the impact they had.
The host is great, and the guests are amazing !!
Highly recommended.
I do like the podcast and the host, She can get rather giggly which is very distracting.

A history-focused interview show that treats notorious historical figures with rigorous analysis and lively banter. Each episode pairs a host with a guest expert—often historians, educators, or authors—to unpack a figure's life, myth, and impact, blending scholarly context with accessible storytelling. Recurring strengths include thoughtful sourcing, provocative takes, and a tone that balances education with entertainment, making complex histories approachable for curious, skeptical listeners and professionals in media, education, or PR looking for engaging interview formats. A notable edge is the host's willingness to challenge conventional narratives and spotlight underexplored angles, while featuring a rotating roster of guests across di... more
