  • Ivan the Terrible ep unbearable

I usually really like this podcast, but this ep was painful to listen to. Corny cringey “humor”, totally uninteresting/irrelevant (to the topic) guest, and honestly just straight up rude to Russians about their history with all the pithy comments about how “crazy” it has “always” been. A real low point for an otherwise usually smart, fun, educational, intelligently critical show.

  • Fun & informative

It’s cool to get a different perspective on famous historical figures. So often they are only described in the rosiest of terms. The show really looks at them from a different perspective that is probably more realistic on the impact they had.

The host is great, and the guests are amazing !!

    Highly recommended.

I feel like I’ve been cheated from my true purpose in life I WANNA HOST A PODCAST TO INTELLECTUALLY DUNK ON AWFUL MEN FROM HISTORY. But seriously, this fills me with glee as a certified hater and nerd.

Henry Hudson with Peter Mancall (Subscriber Preview)
Q: If you had to switch careers and you could not be a historian anymore, what is the academic discipline or job outside of the academy you would pick to undertake?
I would become a journalist who writes about economics and economics in a cultural sense, using history to reach a wider audience while still drawing on scholarly training.
Alonzo Slayback with Devin Thomas O'Shea
Q: If you were going to invent a secret society, what would you be doing and what would you incorporate?
The guest emphasizes the importance of spectacle and costume—like distinctive outfits or visible symbols—paired with a mythic backstory, but also notes the practical economies of these groups (parade floats, memberships, dues) that sustain them even as they claim occult knowledge.
Richard the Lionhearted with Matthew Gabriele (Subscriber Preview)
Q: Can you tell me slash everyone a bit about his life?
Richard II, as the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, inherited a massive empire spanning England and much of western France, did not spend much time in England, led the Third Crusade, and his reign involved significant revolts, political maneuvering, and a complex legacy that blends military achievement with controversy.
