  • Fun & informative

It’s cool to get a different perspective on famous historical figures. So often they are only described in the rosiest of terms. The show really looks at them from a different perspective that is probably more realistic on the impact they had.

The host is great, and the guests are amazing !!

    Highly recommended.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Richard the Lionhearted with Matthew Gabriele (Subscriber Preview)
Q: Can you tell me slash everyone a bit about his life?
Richard II, as the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine, inherited a massive empire spanning England and much of western France, did not spend much time in England, led the Third Crusade, and his reign involved significant revolts, political maneuvering, and a complex legacy that blends military achievement with controversy.
Daisy Bates with Lingthusiasm
Q: How does Bates's work relate to modern issues of crediting collaborators and giving voice to Indigenous speakers?
The discussion suggests greater awareness now about crediting native language speakers and collaborators, the ethical issues in fieldwork, and the need to contextualize archives critically rather than preserving a simplistic heroic narrative.
Daisy Bates with Lingthusiasm
Q: But this person I want to talk about today, should we get into it?
Yes, we should dive in, with a focus on Daisy Bates's life in late 19th and early 20th century Australia, her self-fashioning, and the colonial context that shaped her work and its reception.
Murray Rothbard with Quinn Slobodian
Q: Can you summarize what anarcho-capitalism envisions in terms of the role of the state?
It envisions eliminating the state and replacing it with private orderings, where law, policing, and defense are provided by competing private actors, governed by voluntary contracts rather than sovereign authority.
Frederick II with Richard Cole (Subscriber Preview)
Q: Can we start to talk about what you see as some problems here?
The discussion shifts to the problems in interpreting his legacy, including the reliability of medieval sources and the tendency to mythologize or overstate his impact, while acknowledging the real scholarly work on his court and learning.
