Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ditch the Shoes, Find the Trail | Ken Posner | Author of Chasing the Grid & Barefoot Peak Bagger Chasing 1,000 Mountains
Q: Ken, one thing that I think a lot of us in the outdoor space, especially at the beginning of the year, they like to set goals. Can you share what sparked your thousand mountains barefoot idea and your progress so far?
The idea arose after a chance conversation with a mountaineer about climbing 777 peaks; it evolved into a thousand-mountain goal as a multi-year project to energize his life, encourage others, and make the sport more accessible.
Ditch the Shoes, Find the Trail | Ken Posner | Author of Chasing the Grid & Barefoot Peak Bagger Chasing 1,000 Mountains
Q: Kind of want to follow up on the endurance piece of it. You've done a lot when it comes to the endurance world. What initially drew you specifically to the mountains over say roads or races?
Ken explains that while he loves road running, mountains always called to him, sparked by a formative Mount Jefferson memory and Outward Bound experiences, which led to a long trajectory into peak bagging and barefoot hiking.
The Best Hikes Don't Require a Passport | Stephanie Pearson | National Geographic Explorer & Author of 100 Hikes of a Lifetime U.S.A.
Q: How do you balance showcasing famous trails with lesser-known gems to avoid turning hikes into a bucket list?
By emphasizing the context, accessibility, and stewardship of each trail, making room for under-the-radar paths while explaining their significance and how to visit responsibly, so readers feel inspired but not overwhelmed.
The Best Hikes Don't Require a Passport | Stephanie Pearson | National Geographic Explorer & Author of 100 Hikes of a Lifetime U.S.A.
Q: What does it mean to redefine a hike of a lifetime for everyday hikers?
A hike of a lifetime can be any meaningful experience, from a demanding summit to walking a culturally significant route, and it should be defined by what brings you joy, peace, and a sense of connection rather than by external pressure or comparisons.
The Best Hikes Don't Require a Passport | Stephanie Pearson | National Geographic Explorer & Author of 100 Hikes of a Lifetime U.S.A.
Q: Can you take us back to the Maah Daah Hey Trail moment and why it felt like the right way to open your book?
It felt like a natural opening because the stirring combination of a dramatic weather event, a poignant John Muir quote, and the presence of a partner created a resonant gateway into how the book explores personal meaning in trails and how hardship can intersect with discovery on the trail.
