Rethinking Secularism and Identity in Contemporary Türkiye with Dr Ceren Lord
Q: What is the Contemporary Turkey Series about, and why is it important?
The series relaunched to provide a platform for critical, theoretically innovative, and empirically grounded work on Turkey that goes beyond traditional paradigms and engages with global debates, published works range from policing to education and minority belonging.
Rethinking Secularism and Identity in Contemporary Türkiye with Dr Ceren Lord
Q: Could you talk us through your book Religious Politics in Turkey and its main arguments?
The book challenges the binary view of a secular state versus a religious society, showing that the relationship is not monolithic and highlighting the Islamization of state institutions like the Diyanet while also opposing essentialist readings that reduce Muslims to a single political behavior.
Rethinking Secularism and Identity in Contemporary Türkiye with Dr Ceren Lord
Q: So Ceren, could you start by telling us a bit about the background and your current research?
I was born in Istanbul, lived in Libya, and grew up with a British education that shaped my interest in Turkey; I study how institutions shape political behavior, especially at critical junctures, and how religious authority interacts with the state, which informs questions of secularity and identity.
Living with Byzantium: Heritage of the "Other" with Dr Hakan Tarhan
Q: What is the future of heritage work at the BIAA and how should funding evolve?
The future priority is funding but also targeted support that facilitates community-engaged projects, interdisciplinary collaboration, and cross-border work, with the BIAA acting as a hub to coordinate projects across Turkey, the UK, and the wider Black Sea region.
Living with Byzantium: Heritage of the "Other" with Dr Hakan Tarhan
Q: What do you mean by dissonant heritage and why is it useful for understanding Turkey and Greece?
Dissonant heritage refers to heritage that does not neatly fit the dominant national identity; it creates space to question whose values are attached to monuments and how communities interpret and engage with them in the present, revealing lived experiences that may differ from official narratives.
