America has a fascination with Hasidic Jews; they show up frequently in memoirs, in newspapers, and even on Netflix. But these popular depictions don’t tell the whole story; they just tell the story the public wants to hear. What they hide is a complicated dance between Orthodox Judaism and those who leave the community, and a web of stereotypes that trap Hassidim, rebels, and the public alike. In... more

Here's a conversation from a different podcast by the Shalom Hartman Institute called Identity/Crisis, Hosted by Yehuda Kurtzer. In this episode, he interviews Naomi Seidman on the making of Heretic in the House, and some of the ideas behind it.
The crucial moment in so many stories about leaving the Orthodox community is the decision itself, which is frequently portrayed as a painful and heroic act, one that requires tremendous willpower. But leaving rarely works this way; instead, it is a ... more
The secular world has a narrative about what it means to leave Orthodox Judaism. The Orthodox world has a narrative, too, one that treats those who leave as pitiful people who were dealt a bad hand in life. This story is so deeply ingrained that even... more

This was a fascinating series with a really important perspective on the OTD community and the way the rest of the Jewish community (and world) relates to them and their stories.
A deeply insightful look at the narratives that are told about those who have gone off the derech (otd), i.e. left the fold. The host’s passionate point of view as an otd person shines through without limiting the podcast from empathizing with Orthodox society and from seeking an understanding of things that goes beyond the often reductive narratives held by Orthodox society, the “outside world,” and even otd people themselves.
I’ve always been interested in people who have left closed communities, and, especially Hasidim as I was raised Jewish, Modern orthodox. Very thoughtful, insightful discussion on the complexities from both sides.
Naomi articulates beautifully things, thoughts and experiences of the OTD community I have often struggled to articulate myself. Thank you.
I am only one episode in, but this is an original and fascinating angle on this story, really well told and put together.
