  • So glad we found these podcasts

We have 15 month old Staff cross EBT who has had two previous owners in his short life so far (the owner before us kept him for only 2 weeks before advertising him).

My husband and I are new his FOREVER family. We know we are going to have our work cut out as we have discovered that he has allergies that affect his digestion and his skin.

We also learned that when we got him he was dealing with a giardia parasite problem.

In just five months our vet bills are into 4 figures but he is going... more

  • Stupid advice

What sort of stupid advice is this. Instead of giving advice as how to stop a dog reacting to a doorbell, the advice is to change your doorbell so it only notifies you, or asking delivery driver to leave packages in a separate box. This from a vet apparently.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ep 130 Playtime Gone Wrong: Top Tips for Over the Top, Crazy Play With Your Dog!
Q: Hello and welcome to this episode of the Help! My Dog Podcast. And the question is, help. Playtime always ends with my dog going completely wild.
The host explains that the root issue is inconsistent arousal control and introduces the dimmer switch concept, outlining how to gradually train the dog to modulate energy through stepwise, level-appropriate activities, and promotes the Hub for structured, guided practice.
Ep 125 Do You Have an Aggressive Dog?
Q: What should I do if my dog approaches people or other dogs and starts to growl or snap?
Recognize that the dog is usually acting out of fear or uncertainty rather than aggression, keep the dog on a lead, manage exposure to triggering situations, and seek a tailored behavior plan to teach disengagement and calm responses, ideally with professional guidance.
Ep 122 Why Your Dog "Hates" Random Things: The Hidden Reasons Behind Your Dog’s Reactivity
Q: Hi Tom, I have a six year old Labrador and she is an absolute angel and is unbelievably loyal to me. She hates wheelchairs, Zimmer frames, etc. She also isn't sure of men, but only random ones. Very confusing and I don't know why.
The dog's reactions are driven by novelty and ambiguity; the approach is to reframe novel stimuli as positive experiences by pairing them with rewards and by playing games that build optimism, so the dog learns to view unfamiliar people, objects, and situations as things to explore rather than fears to avoid.
Ep 120 Three Things Every New Dog Owner NEEDS To Know
Q: What should new rescue dog owners focus on in the first weeks?
Focus on reducing pressure and allowing decompression, give the dog opportunities to influence their environment through random rewards and enrichment, and start a guided plan (like the 10‑day Walks plan) to build practical skills for in‑and‑out behavior, while considering professional help if needed.
Ep 118 Troublesome Toilet Walks: What To Do When Walks Are Unavoidable
Q: I can't ditch the dog walks right now. We don't have a garden or outside space, so we have to walk our dog to toilet them. Can we make progress if we have to face these triggers every time we go outside?
Yes, progress is possible by clearly differentiating training walks from toilet walks, using distinct equipment, implementing strong marker cues with high-value rewards, and gradually building skills at home to reduce reactivity, with professional support if needed.
