A few generations ago, you could probably graduate from a PhD program and immediately land yourself a junior faculty position at a nearby university. But as grad school enrollment grew, a new quasi-professional job-description emerged in the nebulous... more
Josh and Dan traveled to Washington DC for the Society for Neuroscience Conference 2023. We chatted with students, postdocs, and faculty about everything from grad school applications to industry jobs to work-life-balance. And we recorded this spe... more
Karla already has a successful career. After completing her training, she’s worked as a pelvic-floor physical therapist for over ten years! Her patients love her, and she loves serving them. But no matter how skilled she becomes at her craft, ther... more
Graduate training has many milestones, but a few stand stronger in memory due to their importance. You may remember the day you passed your comprehensive exams, officially becoming a ‘PhD Candidate.’ Or maybe you’ll remember the day you saw a pape... more
This week, we answer a listener’s question about whether he should pursue schooling beyond a Master’s degree. Plus – once your formal education is complete, how can you continue to focus on learning? What steps should we take to become life-long l... more
Just The Abstract is a new series where we explore a topic in a short, focused episode that’s easy to share. This week, we find out why most science PhD programs stopped requiring the GRE, and whether they’ll demote your application if you fail to pr... more
Here’s a controversial idea: what if graduate school finished on a predictable schedule the way (checks notes) every other academic training program does! Since kindergarten, your education has had fixed milestones. You knew it would take 12 years... more
This week, we’re opening the mailbag once again to answer YOUR burning questions! Change of Plans We start with Allen, who was awarded a grant based on a research proposal he submitted BEFORE joining the lab. When he finished the summer rot... more
I heard 2 episodes and realized that I should support this podcast. This is a gem being a grad student hearing to these while driving.
I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to write a review because I love this podcast and I am constantly recommending it to people interested in grad school or in it already. There is such great content here and it’s delivered in a multitude of connecting ways for all types if listeners to enjoy.
I generally enjoy this podcast, I find it very helpful. It would be great if you could broaden your narrow focus of biomedical into general STEM. For example, if you don’t get into grad school in your first attempt a post bac is a great option. But they don’t exist in every field. Bridge programs are generally available only to minority students. So how do you get more lab experience? Especially if you’re changing fields from undergrad to grad?
Anyway, keeping topics more general would be help... more
for keeping my ears company at the bench. You’ve been a brilliant source of both entertainment and information for a new doctoral student trying to navigate life in the lab during a pandemic. If you wouldn’t mind, I’d appreciate more discussion on how to choose the right lab based on rotations under the current restrictions.
They waste so much time (sometimes 15+ minutes) before getting to the point of the episode. Only downside, otherwise I really enjoy the content that actually relates to the episode.
I wish the hosts had been able to keep their political biases out of the episodes. It was interesting and humorous to hear their hubris to assume that they are absolutely correct. Their ‘training’ as scientists obviously missed the critical thought portion. As a scientist who has been in academia and industry I was hoping for a podcast that would actually show open inquiry and fairness. UNSUBSCRIBE.
I’m a Phd student from the UK thank you so much for this amazing podcast. You guys both have such a relaxed style, I sometimes laugh out loud while listening to you on my bike. On a serious note I’ve had some real challenges with my phd, I’m a mum of 2, the science usually just won’t play ball, and every day I learn new ways to screw up a western blot. Your podcast really shows the human side of a phd and gives me hope and support. Thank you. Everyone listen to them!
This podcast does a great job of explaining all aspects of academia! It can be so hard for first generation PhD students to navigate the “boy’s club” that academia sometimes appears to be. These men seem so nice and approachable. Great speaking voices as well!
I have been preparing to apply to grad school for the past 2 years, and finding this podcast was the last piece of the puzzle I needed to get the ball rolling. I am submitting applications in December and feel so much more confident with HelloPhD’s tips and support.
Thank you, Josh and Dan!
I can’t say enough about this podcast. It’s really helping me as I write my dissertation!!!
Josh and Dan have created the best podcast I’ve heard so far for PhD students, by combining the following three elements:
1. Intriguing interviews
2. Insightful information
3. Easy-going humor and banter
I highly recommend this podcast for anyone going through, or wanting to learn more about, the PhD process!
Dear Josh and Dan,
Thank you so much for making this podcast! I especially appreciate the practical financial advice. The humor mixed in with the content makes working through challenging research experiences less stressful!
This podcast does a great job of covering the challenges of graduate training in science in a very thoughtful and real way. Plus, they give great beer recommendations. 10/10. Outstanding podcast. Keep up the good work!
I’ve been listening to Hello PhD once or twice a week for the past month and it’s been the highlight of my days. Whether you’re curious about beer and random scientific facts or really wonder how is life in grad school (or even if there is life!), this podcast won’t let you down! I’m currently a confused undergrad deciding between academia and the private sector, and this podcast has given me a far better notion of how my life would be if I choose grad school (from prep/application to after grad... more
I’ve spent the last three days driving down the west coast to start my PhD at UCLA, and I’ve spent 90% of that drive listening to Hello PhD. Josh and Dan have so many practical tips and pieces of advice that really make you feel prepared for grad school and remind you of what to focus on as you pursue it. Beyond grateful to have run across this podcast.
