  • If you’re an audiophile…

I’ve really been enjoying this podcast! It’s a nice mix of interesting science and everyday topics that make you think about sound in ways you normally wouldn’t. The hosts explain things clearly without making it feel too technical, and the guests add a lot of variety, especially loved the guest from Broadway. It’s easy to listen to whether you’re just curious about hearing or want to learn something new on your commute. Definitely worth a follow if you like podcasts that are both educational an... more

  • Great show for a sound nerds!

Great storytelling with each guests. As a former CBS employee who worked "American Idol" at times, I really felt a personal connection to the episode with Randy Faustino. The stories took me back to being on Stage 46. Michelle is very warm and her enthusiasm with guests is palpable. I just want to jump in and join the convo.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Ben Bram: Building the Sound Behind the Voices; The Art of Vocal Arrangement
Q: What's the balance between showcasing individual voices and maintaining a group blend?
The band decides who should take solos, and if not specified, I choose the best fit for the moment, always aiming to preserve blend while highlighting key moments.
Ben Bram: Building the Sound Behind the Voices; The Art of Vocal Arrangement
Q: How do you decide when a vocal arrangement is finished?
Finish is when most people are happy with it and the arrangement serves the song; early on there was more obsessive tweaking, but with experience we learn to let things go when the vibe feels right.
Ben Bram: Building the Sound Behind the Voices; The Art of Vocal Arrangement
Q: How does your approach change when it's for film, TV, or a standalone artist?
The needs of each project dictate the arrangement approach; film/TV often require tailored, sometimes simpler or more dramatic treatments, while standalone artists may push for unique, signature sounds based on the specific group and client needs.
Ben Bram: Building the Sound Behind the Voices; The Art of Vocal Arrangement
Q: What first drew you to vocal music?
I started as an instrumentalist, but the social and collaborative aspects of acapella drew me in, especially in college where competitions and tours helped me fall in love with arranging for voice.
Josh Rogosin; From Tiny Desk to Global Sound
Q: Can you walk us through the process of between the time that an artist books to come in to the release product?
The team at NPR Music pitches artists to Bob Boylan, with Rogosin contributing on specialty shows; after a booking is confirmed, a stage plot is created to determine placement and avoid bleed into vocals, followed by a quick soundcheck and a full run-through before recording, then a careful post-production phase to balance ambient sound and vocal levels, with multiple reviews before publishing.
