I never miss an episode of this interesting and informative show. It’s a 5 star listen that is only being awarded 3 stars because the ABC hasn’t posted the latest 2 episodes of the show to podcast subscribers.

  • Biased toward broken convention in nutrition

Dr. Swan has a fine voice for radio. Almost trustworthy. I listen to hear how out of date Dr. Swan is when it comes to nutritional health science. Eat less, move more and the Mediterranean diet is so 20th century anchored and may only benefit a small segment of the unhealthy community. Whereas current researchers are resolving type 2 diabetes, for example, with creative application of the findings from the last decade of studies.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Mailbag: snoring and toenail fungus
Q: Is laser a real option for nail fungus, and what about the kidney risk of systemic tablets?
They discuss that there are multiple options for nail fungus, including systemic tablets which can affect the liver and require monitoring, and that patients should consult a GP or podiatrist to weigh benefits and risks.
Mailbag: snoring and toenail fungus
Q: Would saline spray also help with adult snoring?
The hosts acknowledge the question but explain that adult snoring often has a different underlying cause, so saline spray is not a guaranteed solution and medical advice is recommended.
Imaging for shoulder injuries
Q: When should imaging be used for shoulder injuries?
Imaging should be reserved for cases where there are clear clinical signs of serious pathology (e.g., significant trauma, suspected fracture, cancer, or infection), while routine imaging for all shoulder pain is not necessary.
Imaging for shoulder injuries
Q: What did the Finnish study find about MRI abnormalities in shoulders without pain?
The study found that in people over 40, a vast majority had some abnormality on MRI, and there was little difference between shoulders with pain and those without, suggesting many findings may be incidental and not causative of pain.
Medical emergencies in space
Q: But what happens when something goes wrong in space?
Crews have some capacity to treat emergencies with telemedicine support from Earth and with on-site medical protocols, as in the case of a blood clot where thrombolytics were used and medications were sent up to the space station.
