  • Don’t need the separate stories

The Health Report gets eleven out of ten. The separate stories are a waste of time but I don’t seem to be able to get rid of them

  • Missing episodes

I never miss an episode of this interesting and informative show. It’s a 5 star listen that is only being awarded 3 stars because the ABC hasn’t posted the latest 2 episodes of the show to podcast subscribers.

  • Biased toward broken convention in nutrition

Dr. Swan has a fine voice for radio. Almost trustworthy. I listen to hear how out of date Dr. Swan is when it comes to nutritional health science. Eat less, move more and the Mediterranean diet is so 20th century anchored and may only benefit a small segment of the unhealthy community. Whereas current researchers are resolving type 2 diabetes, for example, with creative application of the findings from the last decade of studies.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Heart attacks are common, but rehab isn't. Why not?
Q: Why are so few eligible patients actually attending rehab, despite the benefits?
Attendance is low due to a mix of factors: short hospital stays limit initial counseling, patients struggle to understand the why of rehab, practical barriers like travel, parking, and work commitments, and capacity issues mean even when referred, many don't enroll or attend later sessions.
Heart attacks are common, but rehab isn't. Why not?
Q: Cardiac rehab is something I think a lot of people have perhaps heard about. Tell me what it actually is and how it works in Australia.
Cardiac rehab is an outpatient program with three core components—tailored exercise supervised by a physio or exercise physiologist, education on risk-factor management and post-event adjustments, and psychosocial support including psychology and peer groups. It has strong evidence for reducing mortality and recurrent events, while improving quality of life and giving patients confidence to return to normal life and work.
Trust in childhood vaccinations is in decline. Here's how to get it back
Q: What strategies can clinicians use to improve conversations and build trust?
Tailor the discussion to the person's readiness, use motivational interviewing techniques, invite top concerns, reflect back understanding, share trustworthy information, and come back to the disease and its impact when making a strong recommendation.
Trust in childhood vaccinations is in decline. Here's how to get it back
Q: What drives the confusion around vaccines, and how has misinformation impacted trust?
Online information and high-profile figures have amplified misinformation, leading parents to question vaccine safety and the reliability of information from healthcare professionals.
Trust in childhood vaccinations is in decline. Here's how to get it back
Q: What is the current landscape of vaccine acceptance in Australia, and who are the most hesitant groups?
Two to three percent are true refusers who decline all vaccines, while about 12-15 percent are hesitant or highly hesitant, requiring substantial reassurance from trusted providers.
