  • Biased toward broken convention in nutrition

Dr. Swan has a fine voice for radio. Almost trustworthy. I listen to hear how out of date Dr. Swan is when it comes to nutritional health science. Eat less, move more and the Mediterranean diet is so 20th century anchored and may only benefit a small segment of the unhealthy community. Whereas current researchers are resolving type 2 diabetes, for example, with creative application of the findings from the last decade of studies.

Ultra-processed foods and kids’ behaviour
Q: What mechanisms could explain the association between ultra-processed foods and behaviour?
Possible mechanisms include displacement of nutrient-rich foods essential for brain development, gut-brain axis interactions with the gut microbiome, and chronic low-grade inflammation that could influence mental and behavioural outcomes.
Ultra-processed foods and kids’ behaviour
Q: What were the behavioural outcomes you were looking at?
We looked at three domains: internalising behaviours like anxiety and withdrawal, externalising behaviours such as hyperactivity or aggression, and a total behavioural score that includes overall challenges and sleep quality.
Aussie schoolkids eating too much salt
Q: Why did you use a 24-hour urine collection, and what are the strengths and limitations of that method?
A 24-hour urine collection captures about 95 percent of daily sodium excretion and provides a reliable measurement of intake, addressing inaccuracies of dietary recalls; however, as a cross-sectional study it cannot establish causality.
Aussie schoolkids eating too much salt
Q: What did your study find about sodium intake and blood pressure overall in children?
Overall, there was no association between sodium intake and blood pressure when looking at all children, but certain subgroups showed differences, particularly girls and children with higher body weight, who appeared more sensitive to sodium's effects.
Mailbag: Metabolic osteoarthritis?
Q: What should I do if I am experiencing side effects from statins?
Consult with a healthcare professional before making any changes to statin medication to manage cholesterol levels effectively.
