  • Good, but earlier version was better

I enjoyed the By The Glass episodes a lot more than season two. They were a lot more approachable, educational and entertaining. I learned so much from the wine feature episodes, trying a new wine along with the podcaster and guest. I’d love to see something like that come back for those of us newer to wine and wanting to learn.

  • A feel good listen and educational too

An enthusiastic host and interesting guests. I’ve learnt more about wine from this podcast in the last few weeks than I have in the last few years!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Why Australian wine must change now | Louisa Rose of Yalumba
Q: What sparked the shift away from animal fining and towards vegan-friendly practices?
The decision came from a combination of wanting to simplify winemaking, improving wine flavor, and aligning with ethical and consumer expectations. The team found that removing fining agents often produced better wines and that the process could be streamlined without sacrificing quality.

Q: Why did you decide to move to wild fermentation, and was there resistance from above?
Louisa explains that wild fermentation offered a more reliable and nuanced expression of place, provided the vineyards were healthy and biodiverse; resistance was not necessarily about risk, but about managing a broader, more complex process. Over time, it became a standard approach across many wines as the benefits outweighed concerns.
"Wine should be judged by style, not variety." | Mike Bennie is a Podcast Natural
Q: Back to the beginning. How did you get into the wine industry?
He started as a delivery driver for a fine wine merchant, where participating in team tastings helped him learn quickly and develop an understanding of wine that impressed clients, eventually guiding him toward a career in wine writing and judging.

Q: How do you balance ambitions for expansion with maintaining the family-oriented, non-corporate culture?
Expansion is pursued with a clear emphasis on culture building and quality-first philosophy. Projects like the hotel and wellness retreat are planned to enhance visitor experiences while ensuring staff feel ownership and the winery remains human-centered rather than corporate.

Q: Can you explain the branding and range split you implemented after relaunching the label?
We created an estate range for openness and freshness, a single vineyard range for more defined site expression, and a reserve range for parcels with intense, mineral character. This structure helps customers understand style and place, not just a uniform quality tier.
