Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Truth in the Data: a chat with Angèle Syty
Q: Can you explain to us how this vibration (jitter) causes systematics in the signal?
The reply details how telescope pointing variations cause photons to hit different detector pixels or different parts of the same pixel, leading to nonuniform responses and photometric variations that can mimic or obscure planetary signals.
Truth in the Data: a chat with Angèle Syty
Q: So Angèle, let's start with your path. How did you get into working on the pipelines and the instrumentation for exoplanets, rather than modeling the atmospheres?
Angèle explains a gradual shift from a master internship toward data processing, influenced by early collaborations with teams working on exoplanet data and the Ariel project, which steered her toward instrument-level challenges and pipeline development.
Exploring planetary atmospheres line by line with Dr Mattia D'Arpa
Q: What role do future telescopes like the ELT play in this field?
The ELT will enable studying larger samples and fainter, smaller planets, potentially moving toward biomarkers, but this will require substantial improvements in signal-to-noise, careful handling of systematics, and likely combining ground-based high-resolution data with space-based spectra for a fuller view.
Exploring planetary atmospheres line by line with Dr Mattia D'Arpa
Q: What are the main challenges of ground-based high-resolution observations?
We face telluric absorption from Earth's atmosphere, weather variability, and the need for precise calibration. Planning multiple observations, using robust data reduction pipelines, and modeling the Earth's and instrument's effects are essential to extract the planetary signal from the noise.
Exploring planetary atmospheres line by line with Dr Mattia D'Arpa
Q: So Mattia, how does high-resolution spectroscopy actually reveal the atmosphere of an exoplanet?
By observing the star-planet system during transit, we look for tiny dips and distortions in the spectrum that indicate absorption by specific atomic and molecular lines in the planet's atmosphere. The high spectral resolution lets us pinpoint individual lines, infer chemical composition, and even study how winds move gas around the planet.
