  • So what I need

I just started listening to this podcast. It accompanies me to and from work on my hour drive. I lost my sweet Jakob on 4/22/24 at 18 years old to a fentanyl poisoning. This has been such a nightmare. And listening to this podcast has helped me find a little comfort. The topics are so diverse but relevant. I often feel like the topics around child death steer away from some of the very real topics like mental health and overdose. So thank you!!!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Losing Two Children and Learning to Live Again
Q: How did your faith influence how you navigated Mark's murder and the subsequent handling of the case?
Our faith guided us to forgive and to place trust in God over the urge to control the legal process. We avoided becoming consumed by the trial and instead focused on healing, helping others through Emily's Hope and Sterling Rose Sanctuary, and supporting the families involved in the broader impact of the tragedy.
Losing Two Children and Learning to Live Again
Q: Marcia, could you share a bit of background on the loss of your first son Sterling at age 21?
Sterling was active and dedicated to law school and community service. The night of his death, we had spent time with him and then woke to police at the door; the news of his passing was sudden and devastating, and we carried that shock while trying to shield the rest of the family and later finding meaning through faith and service.
The Dandelion in the Window
Q: What helped Toni begin the process of breaking the cycle of addiction for her family?
A decisive moment of seeking help—walking into a treatment facility, acknowledging the need for support, and committing to recovery for herself and her children.
Honoring Artists We've Lost
Q: Tell me about Ethan and how his creative work influenced your mission.
Ethan was deeply creative, wrote journals, poetry, music, and even started a novel; after his death, Andrea discovered these writings and realized many artists leave behind unfinished work. This inspired her to build the Artist Lives Gallery to ensure such voices aren't lost and to provide a home for their creations and stories, while also using the platform to support grieving families.
A Brain Scientist’s Warning Every Parent Should Hear
Q: How should parents address cannabis with their kids in light of your findings?
Start early, speak with honesty about how cannabis changes the brain, and use the science to empower kids to protect their brains rather than simply telling them 'don't use.'
