  • So refreshing!

I’ve always had an interest British and American history; French not so much. Then I started listening to this marvelous podcast. Wow, the French Revolution and the rise of Napoleon really are the keys to understanding the modern world! And the whole concept of grey history — getting away from noxious good guy-bad guy narratives — is SO refreshing. I’m signing up to be a Patreon sponsor today. Thank you and keep it coming.

  • How can it be so good?!

Who knew one could engage with a podcast for so long about history? William Clark anticipates the listeners needs to make it easy to actively listen during the podcast. He pauses and repeats just when you need a second to catch up. He adds a joke or a reflective sentence just when you need it. Amazing orator. Give this man an award and PhD

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Q&A The People's Voice Part III
Q: How would the revolution change if Lafayette was assassinated before the Champ de Mars Massacre of July 1791?
The outcome depends on who pulls the trigger; an arch-royalist assassination would radicalize the revolution and threaten the monarchy, while a leftist or mob-related death could hasten moderation's collapse and push toward consolidation of the monarchy or a different political path.
Q&A The People's Voice Part III
Q: What is the current state of scholarly opinion on the role of climate and weather on the Revolution, particularly 1791-93?
Modern scholarship supports a nuanced view: weather and poor harvests helped catalyze unrest but were not the sole cause; local conditions, political structures, and ongoing war shaped whether food insecurity translated into revolution.
Q&A The People's Voice Part III
Q: Napoleon's police minister got quite infamous later on with his net of informants. But does his career start during this time or is it too early?
The host clarifies Fouché's rise begins during the de-Christianisation period (1793) and that his early leadership in Lyon foreshadows the later Parisian spymaster role, with a focus on internal security and political suppression.
Q&A The People's Voice Part III
Q: previous religious campaigns had driven almost every Protestant out of France, or converted them to Catholicism.
The host explains that replacing Catholicism with the Cult of Reason would be exceptionally difficult due to the dominance of Catholic identity, the size of Protestant groups, and the substantial challenges in building a new, nationally accepted religious framework.
1.106 Piedmont-Sardinia with Christopher Storrs
Q: Is Sardinia Piedmont one of the great powers and how do you characterize its diplomatic position in the 18th century?
Sardinia-Piedmont is not a great power but exploits its strategic position through effective diplomacy, particularly relying on British support against France and Austria.
