I’m disappointed and surprised at the low quality of this lecture. It seemed to be pitched at 10-year-olds. If this is degree level education I think we should seriously consider scrapping half of our universities

  • Excellent

Especially Alec Ryrie’s series on the legacy of the Reformation and the history of atheism, and the lectures on the eponymous Thomas Gresham are superb. This is unabashedly intelligent stuff and the brain-straining is much appreciated in an age of ubiquitous lowest-common-denominator.

  • Manu excellent lectures

The lecture series on unbelief from the 14th to the 17th centuries with Alec Ryrie is worth multiple times of five stars. How I love intelligent, rigorous and source-built scholarship - especially when it is presented with such flair.

  • Audio only is much appreciated!

I have been falling asleep to Gresham lectures for several years, as well as listening with full attention to topics that really interest me. I’ve been following the YouTube channel, which unfortunately means leaving my screen on overnight, running down my battery on my phone and adding light to the room where I’m sleeping. I’m thrilled to discover a podcast version with only the audio. If you are looking for something to fall asleep to that is interesting enough to distract from circling though... more

Gresham College Podcast with Antony Penrose
Q: How did Miller's writing complement her photographs in revealing her as a person?
Her writing provided a direct, intimate voice that conveyed the emotional and moral weight of what she witnessed, making her work feel like a conversation rather than a static collection of images.
Gresham College Podcast with Antony Penrose
Q: What was the turning point that changed how you viewed your mother's work?
The discovery of a Vogue back issue with Miller's reporting made him re-evaluate her career, from a dismissed figure to a serious war photographer and witness whose writing and images together offer a powerful, integrated narrative.
The Maths of Music (and the Music of Maths) - Milton Mermikides and Sarah Hart
Q: What does it mean when composers say they are writing from ear?
Writing by ear refers to the intuitive process composers use to derive emotional resonance from musical intervals, often without explicitly calculating their mathematical relationships.
The Operatic Showstopper: ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ - Dominic Broomfield-McHugh
Q: How does someone know that they're an opera singer rather than another genre of singer?
Rebecca explains that she realized her singing voice was different from an early age, and despite facing mockery at school, she felt a strong desire to become an opera singer. She was inspired by opera recordings from a young age.
