  • The podcast that skateboarding has desperately needed

After years of witnessing women and gender-expansive skateboarders having to uncomfortably subject themselves as guests, and occasionally co-hosts, to the predominance of male-led skateboard podcasts (with the rare exception of the more sensitively hosted Beyond Boards), Good Luck With That stands strong among other emerging women-led podcasts like Board Women, Carving it Out, and No Big Deal. What really sets Good Luck With That apart is, in particular, the critical and conscientious hosting by... more

  • This is such a rad podcast. I'm a mid 30s dude and I'm so tired of listening to other mid 30s dudes drone on and on about skating. The GLWT trio came out of the gate swinging with a super fun, informative, and engaging pod. They don't just lean on being stars in skating to deliver boring, monotone slop. They're genuinely a blast to listen to. I really hope this podcast goes and goes. Thank you for all the work and joy you've put into this!

Q: Can you explain what Skate Like a Girl is and what its future looks like?
Skate Like a Girl is a mission-driven organization focused on making skateboarding more inclusive through programs that build confidence, leadership, and social justice, with ongoing expansion across Seattle, Portland, and the Bay Area; its future involves continuing to grow these programs, support communities, and empower youth.
Natalie Porter: Girl Gangs, Zines & Power Slides.
Q: Can you tell us about the late 90s into the early 2000s, when we saw a boom around women's skateboarding?
The Riot Grrrl movement and the rise of girl power played significant roles in this movement, but there was a corporate aspect that sometimes detracted from the authenticity of women's skateboarding.
Natalie Porter: Girl Gangs, Zines & Power Slides.
Q: What was the shift that happened once the skateboarding industry formed?
Initially, skateboarding was inclusive but became gendered as it commercialized, leading to significant disparities in the treatment and recognition of women in the sport.
Natalie Porter: Girl Gangs, Zines & Power Slides.
Q: As a librarian and historian, what themes kept popping up in your research?
There's a recurring pattern of DIY culture due to the male dominance in the industry, with women often creating their own spaces and communities.
