  • Insightful and very current

This is a great program - congrats and Thank You for such an insightful podcast! I work in the localization industry and also happen to end up in it “by accident”, but I’m glad I never looked back. Listening to your podcast has inspired me to continue to learn even much more about the language industry and all its ramifications, so much so that now I’m continuing my education in the field. I just discovered the program this year but I have been catching up with all previous episodes. Today, I ha... more

  • Smug much?

I just listened to the first episode and have to say that I found Renato's almost complete disregard for the work that translators do (we "are like toilet paper - you don't notice us until you need us") to be a huge turn off. His contention that his role as an LSP manager will continue to grow and evolve while the translator's role fades into obscurity is not only laughably smug, but pretty inaccurate if you look at current trends in the field.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Is studio-free dubbing really around the corner?
Q: What is the TAM for AI dubbing and the bigger market opportunity for media and entertainment?
The current AI dubbing market is relatively small, around tens of millions, while the broader dubbing and localization market could be in the billions. There is substantial room for growth, and in the near term the focus is on achieving product-market fit and then scaling through partnerships or acquisitions with larger players.
Is studio-free dubbing really around the corner?
Q: How will foundational technology be used in AI dubbing, and who will own or orchestrate this technology?
Foundational models will be built by specialized data scientists; then there will be a control layer where linguists work in an interface similar to Pro Tools, an orchestration layer that assembles media and scripts, and a service layer for delivery. The approach favors orchestration and human-in-the-loop at the top, while large tech firms may own the underlying tech, with ADAPT and partners focusing on the orchestration and human-centric capabilities.
Is studio-free dubbing really around the corner?
Q: Justin, ADAPT, give us a couple seconds on what ADAPT is.
ADAPT is a two-year-old startup that blends new AI tooling with traditional localization experts called Cultural Ambassadors, aiming to combine the best of AI with human linguistic and cultural expertise to deliver high-quality dubbing.
Can AI help bring underrepresented languages onto the global map?
Q: What does the cultural intelligence layer mean to you personally in AI development?
It means recognizing that language and culture vary across regions and generations, requiring humans to interpret and adapt AI outputs to maintain authenticity rather than assuming a one-size-fits-all solution.
Can AI help bring underrepresented languages onto the global map?
Q: How has AI influenced your approach to translation and what new skills have you had to develop?
AI has driven us to expand from traditional translation to include quality assurance, dubbing, and post-editing, while underscoring the need for human oversight and ongoing training to handle nuance and cultural context.
