For 50 years, Lew Wasserman ruled Hollywood from the shadows, a symbol of ruthless power in a dark suit, oversized eyeglasses, and a permanent tan. He oversaw seismic innovations in actors' earnings, in the rise of television, in blockbuster movies, in the transformation of film studios into theme parks. The mogul was a critical figure in ending the famed labor strikes of 1960 and 1981. Even more,... more

I think the podcast needs to be de-essed. Great content be harsh to listen to.
This is a great telling of Lew Wasserman’s story, a man who ruled Hollywood though most people outside of the industry likely had never heard of him. Great Hollywood history and a little bit of mafia too. Something for everyone!
Mr. Levy may be a highly esteemed critic, journalist et al., but I don’t understand how he’s a viable broadcaster. His narration, for me, deadens the intriguing biography of his subject with a spoken pedantic ploddery through his own prose. Over-enunciating each word just incase you’re 150 years old, there’s a generic cornball situation with the background music which again, pulls down the listenable quality of the cast. I was excited to start the show but I doubt I’ll finish it. Shame.
Fascinating story, super well-told.
Wonderful writing—really everything one expects from a professionally produced podcast. That said I find only one thing missing: Lew Wasserman’s charitable side. He really, really was an exceptional person. Los Angeles misses him hugely.
