  • The whole truth?

I appreciate the less well publicized opinions shared. But I can’t understand why Professor Marandi never gets challenged on how the Iran government has terrorized its citizens. He makes a lot of good points about the actions of the US but paints an incomplete (and overly rosy) picture of the Iranian regime. Let’s do truth but not selectively.

  • A realist foreign policy podcast

Academics tend to do a horrible job of having an honest and objective opinion on foreign policy. They’re too embedded in their field, too encircled by the same thoughts, too tied to their own frameworks, and too risk-averse to put it all on the line to have a nontraditional thought. Prof Diesen is unique among his class. Top tier analysis, journalism, and above all, podcasting. No ads, super patient with his guests, short and insightful when speaking himself, and has the best talent in his rolod... more

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Chas Freeman: Trump Goes to Beijing After Historic Defeat in Iran
Q: And well, we now see that on Thursday, it's Trump's turn to go to Beijing where he will meet with Xi Jinping. And I was wondering, how are you assessing this meeting in terms of, well, why is he going and what's on the agenda and what can we expect?
Freeman argues that the trip appears to be driven more by domestic prestige and transactional aims than by a coherent strategy, with unclear agenda and limited preparation, and he suspects limited substantive gains from the summit.
Jeffrey Sachs: New European Military Bloc for War Against Russia
Q: How do you interpret the current push for a European NATO and Ukraine's involvement?
The guest suggests this moves Europe toward renewed bloc politics and potentially war with Russia, reflecting a departure from indivisible security and a shift toward American-led power projection.
Mattias Desmet: The West's Descent Toward Totalitarianism
Q: How does mass formation operate to produce a totalitarian state, and what conditions enable it to arise?
Mass formation starts with a significant portion of the population feeling lonely and disconnected, which creates a vulnerability to a unifying narrative. When a narrative offers a sense of belonging and a common enemy, a critical mass forms, enabling leaders to mobilize the masses and create a coercive state apparatus. The process progresses through identification with a collective ideal, leadership by speakers, and the emergence of a state that suppresses dissent and elevates solidarity with the narrative.
George Beebe: Europe-Russia War as the U.S. Pulls Back?
Q: What is the preferred outcome for US policy in Ukraine?
A negotiated settlement that reduces the risk of a wider war and preserves Western strategic interests, rather than prolonged, high-intensity confrontation.
Richard Wolff: Collapse - Iran Is the Graveyard of the U.S. Empire
Q: So what was your main takeaway from the meeting in Beijing between the American president and the Chinese, and what can we expect to come from it?
The takeaway is that we are witnessing a transition moment in world history, with the American Empire in relative decline and China on the upswing, illustrating a shift toward a multipolar order and highlighting different strategic trajectories regarding trade, diplomacy, and energy.
