  • A realist foreign policy podcast

Academics tend to do a horrible job of having an honest and objective opinion on foreign policy. They’re too embedded in their field, too encircled by the same thoughts, too tied to their own frameworks, and too risk-averse to put it all on the line to have a nontraditional thought. Prof Diesen is unique among his class. Top tier analysis, journalism, and above all, podcasting. No ads, super patient with his guests, short and insightful when speaking himself, and has the best talent in his rolod... more

  • Most informativ

I am glad voices like you and your interview partners are (still) around. I listen to the show almost daily. It would be great to interview more hard liners, hawks and war mongers on their world view as I don’t understand such ideas.

In the Duma they’re talking now about canceling the 2 plus 4 contract signed after germanys reunification. It would be great to hear more about this topic.

    Thank you very much.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Scott Ritter: Trump Calls Putin for Iran War Off-Ramp
Q: What is the likely behavior of Russia in this scenario, and could Russia mediate a settlement?
Ritter argues Russia benefits from diplomacy and could act as a mediator, leveraging its framework with Iran to craft terms closer to Russian goals, potentially guiding both sides toward a negotiated pause.
Scott Ritter: Trump Calls Putin for Iran War Off-Ramp
Q: Is there an off-ramp to this conflict, and what would it look like from an Iranian perspective?
Ritter suggests the off‑ramp would require Iranian agreement, with the United States and Israel having little to no direct influence on that outcome, implying the war could extend unless Iran consents to terms.
Seyed M. Marandi: Threat of Seizing Kharg Island & the Use of Nuclear Weapons
Q: What are the risks of a wider war for Iran and for global energy markets if the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted or the region sees intensified conflict?
The risks include long-term damage to global energy supplies, severe economic consequences for oil markets, and a hardening of regional alliances; Iran stresses that it would respond to aggression but prefers not to escalate, highlighting that disruption would backfire on aggressors and destabilize the international economy.
Seyed M. Marandi: Threat of Seizing Kharg Island & the Use of Nuclear Weapons
Q: What do you think is the likely Iranian response if the US seizes Kharg Island or otherwise escalates?”,
Iran would retaliate with actions that would target US and allied assets, including energy infrastructure and regional bases, and the broader goal would be to deter further aggression while pressing for a negotiated settlement that guarantees security and access to energy routes.
Einar Tangen: Age of Irrationality - Global Economic Crisis & Nuclear War
Q: Do you see a Westphalian moment where Europe, after immense losses, decides to redraw borders and stop fighting by proxy elsewhere?
The most rational ending, if any, would be a rare instance of recognizing mutual limits and choosing diplomacy over perpetual conflict, essentially accepting multiple centers of power to prevent total collapse. Without such a turn, the cycle of escalation could continue, harming economies and security for years to come.
