Around the campfire, we’ll swap stories from life after faith shifts, laugh at the quirks of high-demand religion, and dig into the ways Mormonism shows up in our culture—from pop culture an... more

  • Victim

You have a strong victim mentality. It’s sad and I’m not Mormon or religious.

  • Validating and honest

I absolutely love this podcast! It’s very healing to listen to, and so many things that Hayley and her guests share on the show either resonate with me or open my eyes to something new! I love and admire Hayley’s thoughtfulness and vulnerability and I’m always recommending this pod to my exmo friends. I know the only 1-star reviews here are from current members who need to understand that not all content exists for them. These spaces are very needed and therapeutic for us church escapees lol. • I’m not LDS but…

I’ve always had a fascination for high demand religions and I appreciate the way Hayley unpacks both the practices and beliefs commonly held by most LDS members. Sometimes episodes are fun, sometimes more deep or thought-provoking, but I thoroughly enjoy it!

  • So good

I’ve been listening to Girlscamp for awhile now. It’s among my top 3 favorite podcasts. I’m a “neverMo”, but I’ve been deconstructing from evangelical religion for years. I’m much older than Hayley and I’m amazed at her insights, how articulate she is, and her wisdom especially at such a young age.

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

#MomTalk: Motherhood After Religion
Q: How do you navigate a balance between grief and also being happy for others when friends are having babies after your miscarriage?
It's important to give yourself grace and validation about your feelings while protecting your mental well-being by creating boundaries with triggers like social media or baby showers that may cause unmanageable emotions.
#MomTalk: Motherhood After Religion
Q: How do you manage the balance of listening to and respecting your parents/grandparents' advice and setting clear expectations for how you are choosing to raise your kids?
I don't really give much weight to unsolicited advice because every parent's situation is unique. Each parent knows their circumstances better than anyone else, and while I respect their wisdom, ultimately, I have the authority over how to raise my kids.
#MomTalk: Motherhood After Religion
Q: What's it like being a mom to twins? Do you ever wish you had one at a time?
Twins have become a niche interest of mine, and I appreciate the bond between them, but it can be really hard. There's also the blessing of not having to go through pregnancy twice, although there are challenges like managing their identities and ensuring they develop as individuals.
Not Your Mormon Poster Child with Ellee Duke
Q: What was your experience after leaving the church?
I felt immensely better and experienced peace for the first time in years.
Not Your Mormon Poster Child with Ellee Duke
Q: What inspired your song 'Poster Child'?
It's about giving yourself permission to break out of expectations and be who you are without feeling bad about it.
