  • Interesting interview as far as I got but the poor audio quality for the interviewee made it too uncomfortable to listen right through.

  • Yes!! The Geomob podcast is long overdue

I’ve been to a number of Geomob events and love attending them to get an inside scoop on what is happening in the world of Geo/Location and general mapping fun.

I’m really pleased that we now have the podcast edition to look forward to (especially helpful in times of lockdown!).

Ed is a great host and there’s some very knowledgeable speakers on the show. I’d recommend listening to the John Craig interview on location based advertising.

Disclaimer: I'm one of the co-hosts of the podcast.

Ed and I are old friends who've worked in Geo for a long time. Ed runs the Geomob series of events in London, Munich, Barcelona and Lisbon. I've mentored and invested in Geo start-ups for over decade

In this podcast we chat about trends and current topics in Geo, we share our experiences in our current projects and businesses and we invite friends and past speakers from Geomob to join us

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Benjamin Trigona-Harany: Mapping Ottoman Transportation Networks
Q: What inspired this project and why go Ottoman?
It started from a long-held curiosity about historical travel times sparked by early maps, then evolved as modern software enabled digitization and the addition of a temporal dimension to networks.
Ben Abelshausen: Geomob Belgium and the Bike Data Project
Q: Ben, what is Bike Data Project?
It is a project that incubates and continues the idea started by a Swedish filmmaker to allow cyclists to donate their ride data (GPX) so that cyclists become visible in the data landscape, empowering advocacy and informing planners, while addressing privacy concerns through aggregated, controlled access.
Keiko Nomura: viewtif, A Tool for Visualizing Geospatial Data"
Q: Is it streaming data capable, for example from cloud ecosystems like the Copernicus Data Space (NetCDF outputs) so you can see data before downloading?
Not yet, but it's on the radar; there's openness to future enhancements via community pull requests to support streaming or server-based data access.
Keiko Nomura: viewtif, A Tool for Visualizing Geospatial Data"
Q: Cool. So maybe you could explain a little bit about what it does.
The main purpose is to let users view TIFF and related data formats quickly and easily without heavy desktop GIS software, focusing on fast previews and expanding to formats like NetCDF and HDF in response to user needs.
Katy Whitaker: Historic England Aerial Mapper
Q: What is the motivation behind creating the Aerial Photo Explorer?
The motivation is to make aerial imagery more accessible so people can utilize it for research, education, and understanding the landscape.
