  • A fitting cross section of the mapping industry

If you work in the geospatial industry or just love maps, this is the podcast for you. I have listened to many of the episodes over the years and there is a nice range, from the deeply technical Geoparquet episode to the more personal such as Daniel’s story of his career journey. I recently listened to an older episode and it was amazing how well it aged, predicting some of the trends that would later emerge in the industry.

10 Tools for Telling Stories With Maps
Q: How do you integrate AI/LLMs into your workflow while maintaining rigor in spatial analysis?
Using Claude Code with a persistent memory layer (PAI) to orchestrate and accelerate repeatable data workflows, while still validating results with traditional GIS tools and ensuring proper projection handling and methodological transparency.
10 Tools for Telling Stories With Maps
Q: What are some of the other tools you rely on early in a project, and how do you start turning spatial data into visuals?
PostGIS on Crunchy Bridge for reliable cloud hosting, followed by Geo Layers 3 for animation-ready map elements; GDAL and Mapshaper for data preparation and SVG outputs to drive animation pipelines.
10 Tools for Telling Stories With Maps
Q: What is your number 10 tool?
Felt, chosen for its collaborative features and fast pre-planning capabilities that let the team quickly map routes, visualize spatial data, and share interactive previews with non-technical collaborators.
Common Space
Q: What governance structures are you considering for a community-driven constellation?
A governance task force would oversee decision-making, data access rules (including conflict data handling and holdbacks), and eligibility for different user groups, ensuring ethical use and broad community input.
Common Space
Q: How do you plan to balance cost with technical capabilities like resolution and latency?
By treating satellites as commodity systems, aiming for sub-meter resolution while leveraging lower-cost launch and operation options, and focusing on open licensing to maximize usability and impact, with daily revisit goals achievable through a mix of satellites and efficient tasking.
