This episode gathers together the main threads from the recent series on penal substitutionary atonement, or PSA (episodes 177 through 185).

What does Paul mean when he says that Christ “became a curse for us” in Galatians 3:13?
This passage is often pulled into atonement debates as though Paul were making a direct statement about God punishing Jesus instead of us. But Galatians 3 does n... more
What is atonement actually for?
After several episodes working through substitution, penalty, wrath, ransom, and sin-bearing, this episode steps back to ask the larger question. If atonement is not only about what Christ saves us from, then what doe... more
What does it mean to “bear sin”? Many Christians hear the whole doctrine of penal substitution inside that phrase, but the biblical language is more varied than that. In this episode, we use frame semantics to trace sin-bearing through Cain, Joseph, ... more

I started my journey into theology- truly- with Dr. Mike Heiser. Anyone familiar with his work will immediately appreciate Carey’s ongoing contributions to teach the masses what many don’t get exposure to outside of seminary.
This show is amazing and challenges me every time I listen - which is what I need. Subscribe and enjoy - it is marvelous!!! Brilllant mind that can be easily understood- that’s a dynamic combo!
I am soooo thankful to the teachers & scholars that have the time and ability to “raid the ivory towers” and bring those riches of information to the layman like myself. Your time investment in helping to build this area of the kingdom is greatly appreciated! Keep up the great work Carey! 👍🏻😉
I love learning about the history of the ancient near east, Bible patterns and themes, and just theology in general. Carey covers interesting topics in depth, and clear to understand. Definitely appreciate her sharing her knowledge, lessons and information I try to pass down to my two teenage boys as well.
Carey seems to know the text and the background do well and she explains things so thoroughly, answering my mental questions. She is humble, but also speaks with authority in that I can tell she has done her homework. I always learn something new from her. I am grateful for her.

A densely analytical show that prioritizes careful, text-centered biblical theology and exegesis. Across recent episodes the host revisits substitution, ransom, and replacement patterns, arguing for frame- and context-based readings rather than simple penal substitution. Depth, rigorous sourcing, and pastoral practicality are balanced with accessible explanations, and solo-host formats are common with thoughtful engagement of primary texts and cross-biblical patterns. A notable strength is the willingness to challenge traditional atonement models while offering a cohesive, pattern-driven vision of Scripture from creation to new creation, often inviting listener questions and ongoing dialogue.
