  • Absolutely brilliant!

I started following Matthew on social media. I visited the store on a trip to Ireland recently…made a purchase and had a blast learning from them. I had not listened to Alyse & Matthew’s podcast before the visit. I’ve been on a “bender” of listening to their podcasts since I left! They have such a vast knowledge of the antique jewelry industry and pieces. I’ve so enjoyed listening! It’s as if I’m sitting in the shop with them talking all over again. I’m never going to be a millionaire inv... more

  • Brilliant

I am a fan of gems and jewelry and consider myself knowledgeable. Nope. After listening to these podcasts now I consider myself more knowledgeable yet not close to Matthew and Alyce’s knowledge. They have given me a reason to look at turquoise pieces. I also appreciate how they mention famous gems of the type they are talking about. Today google was all over Faberge Pink Topaz Cross.

How to Get Into the Antique Jewellery Trade | Ask Me Anything
Q: What career paths are viable for someone starting in gemology or antique jewellery?
Start with foundational gemology courses (GIA AJP, Diamond and Colored Stone Essentials, Retail Essentials), supplement with art/history courses, and seek hands-on roles in shops or galleries to build a portfolio and network; be prepared to offer a mix of skills beyond just valuation, such as research, photography, and restoration.
How to Get Into the Antique Jewellery Trade | Ask Me Anything
Q: How do you know when something is a good find in terms of gemstones?
Trust instinct developed from handling many pieces, then confirm with tests and third‑party lab results to verify origin and quality, especially looking for natural colour zoning and unheated characteristics.
How to Get Into the Antique Jewellery Trade | Ask Me Anything
Q: What makes a really good emerald?
Colour or greenness is the most important factor; the best emeralds show vibrant, forest-green tones. Cut and origin also matter, with Colombian emeralds historically commanding the highest prices due to their colour and characteristic inclusions, while imperfections are more tolerated in emeralds than in diamonds.
A New Kind of Dealer: Antique Jewellery in a Social Media World
Q: What advice would you give to a newcomer wanting to enter antique jewellery dealing today?
Learn from both books and hands-on experience at auctions, build relationships with established dealers, and use content creation to establish credibility and a network.
A New Kind of Dealer: Antique Jewellery in a Social Media World
Q: How has online presence changed the way you evaluate pieces and interact with other dealers?
Online presence creates a pre-existing familiarity that accelerates trust; dealers can gauge the seller's expertise through videos and interactions, making negotiations smoother.
