  • An upgrade!

Like many others, I was very sad about 538 shutting down. GD Politics has been a welcome continuation of the 538 podcast, but even better now that Galen is on his own. I think the show has benefited from more creative freedom, variety, and being able to hear Galen’s point of view more front and center. Galen was always an excellent host but this podcast has showed that he’s also an excellent analyst and commentator as well. Thanks Galen!

Talking Points

Recent interactions between the hosts and their guests.

Democrats Clash in Illinois, Crowd California, and Eye Iowa
Q: Ryan asks for quick thoughts about Illinois' 9th district.
The discussion characterizes Illinois' 9th as a battleground within the party, with implications for intra-party dynamics and how candidates frame their platforms to appeal to diverse Democratic coalitions.
Democrats Clash in Illinois, Crowd California, and Eye Iowa
Q: James asks for conclusions of the Texas primary and what they might imply for the rest of the country.
The hosts explain that Texas results show strong performance for candidates who can mobilize specific demographic blocs, but caution against overgeneralizing to the rest of the country due to primary-specific dynamics and local issues; turnout and down-ballot undervotes were also discussed as nuanced signals.
Democrats Clash in Illinois, Crowd California, and Eye Iowa
Q: Joe asks whether Democratic votes could be so split in California that two Republicans make it to the general election and when consolidation might occur.
Mary and the team suggest that while a top-two system creates the possibility of a Republican advancing, current polling and fundraising dynamics make it a stretch, with consolidation likely but not guaranteed depending on candidate quality and poll coverage.
How Today Resembles The Run-Up To WWI
Q: What about the United States as a global power? How does 'empire fatigue' shape current strategy and risk?
The U.S. exhibits fatigue and ambiguity in its foreign commitments, which can cloud decision-making and invite misreadings from allies and rivals. This ambiguity can create surprises in alliance behavior and increase the chance that others test U.S. resolve, potentially escalating tensions.
How Today Resembles The Run-Up To WWI
Q: Let's start with geopolitics: you compare China today to Germany in the early 20th century. Can you flesh out that analogy and what it implies for today's risks?
China's rise resembles Germany's late-19th/early-20th-century ascent in terms of rapid modernization, nationalism, and a sense of margining influence within a shifting system. The comparison highlights how a rising power can unsettle established orders and how allies and rivals might react—potentially destabilizing if alignment and incentives aren't managed carefully.
